Slaiv
Three words: I HATE EA. [A.K.A. Electronic Arts] They're becoming the next new Microsoft - taking over everything. First, it was the Bond license. Give it up EA - not a single Bond game you've made has been good. They've picked up the Oddworld Series, the Timesplitters series, the LOTR movie media rights [which is fitting, those ignorant f*cktards!] And now: E.A. Granted Exclusive Rights to NFL Although I don't really care [i've never bought a Madden Game], it pisses me off to know that they alone have the exclusive rights to such a broadly-used and known organisation. No more ESPN NFL 2KX, no NFL Blitz, etc.... Pretty soon: Electronic Arts proudly presents: Super Mario Bond Undercover meets Link-Ryu in: Need for Speed 63: Oddworld VS. Middle Earth [with bonus Halo expansion pack!] And all because some rich, greedy b*stard doesn't want to allow healthy competition to "take his money away." P.S. And yes, I know I spelled "United" "Unitd."
Abramul
Isn't there an AFL? If one company has the rights to only one of the leagues, that doesn't give them a monopoly. And further, if the games they make are crap, then other companies will either license other franchises, or make generic games. Of course, just because they tell you not to name your players the same names, and set their stats the same, doesn't mean you WON'T. And, by the way, you can't copyright data. That includes names, weight, height, yardage, and the like.

FlightlessBird
So far, My favorite game company, Blizzard and all of its factions ("Craft" games represent ^_^ ) , has not been bought yet by those greedy monopolizing corporate businessmen at E.A...yet...Can't forget Bethesda, either. But I guess your right.-offtopic- Pardon my ignorance, but aren't monopolies "unconstitutional"?
surian
I'm not a very big fan of EA myself. They do put out some quality games but recently there have been some very bad problems with EA as far as how they treat their workers. As someone planning on getting into the game industry in the next couple of years I have to say that the way that EA has been dealing with their employees is sickening. This all started about 2 months ago when an EA programmer's wife wrote a blog entry claiming that the company was working her husband and the rest of its employees to death (almost litterally). Mandatory work days were from 9:00am to 10:30pm 7 days a week with "time off for good behavior" on saturdays at 6:30pm (maybe). There was no overtime, there was no compensation of any sort. Now, this is normal in what developers call "Crunch time", that is the last month or so before a game is going out the door and all the bugs must be worked out. During crunch time it's common for developers to spend hundred hour weeks at work, however the difference here is that 100 hour weeks are mandatory all throughout the year for every developer at EA. Usually, at the end of a crunch time every person involved with the project will get a month off paid vacation to recover, however at EA this does not happen. Oh, and did I mention that they don't pay overtime? I think I did up there somewhere. Right now there are class action lawsuits being filed by the employees against EA games and since this practice has become public knowledge EA's reputation amongst game developers (and anyone simpathetic to them) has gone down tremendously. I also don't like EA because it seems that every time a Mod comes out that people start to like, EA just steals the idea and makes money off of it. It's very irritating. So far, My favorite game company, Blizzard and all of its factions ("Craft" games represent happy.gif ) , has not been bought yet by those greedy monopolizing corporate businessmen at E.A...yet...Can't forget Bethesda, either. But I guess your right.-offtopic- Pardon my ignorance, but aren't monopolies "unconstitutional"? Well, you're partly right. Blizzard used to be part of Vevendi though, and they are a HUGE multinational coorperation. I'm not sure who owns Blizzard now though because I thought that Vevendi sold off it's electronic gaming deptartments a year ago or so. While I don't think that monopolies themself are unconstitutional (you'll never find it in the constitution where it says 'you can't have monopolies") I know that there are tons of anti-trust laws that prevent monopolies from forming. The problem is that anytime one of these companies becomes a monopoly, they are so powerful that they can sort of bend the laws around themselves to allow them to do more than they really should be legally allowed to do. Microsoft was going through a long period of anti-trust suits a year or so ago and they always seem to come out smelling like a rose.

Slaiv
We don't have monopolies. Also, to the overworked people at EA. Quit your vulking job.<{POST_SNAPBACK}>And how would they earn money then? ^_^ "And, by the way, you can't copyright data. That includes names, weight, height, yardage, and the like."These agreements give EA the exclusive rights to the NFL teams, stadiums, and players for use in its football video games for the next five years. You read that right…exclusive rights to the NFL teams, stadiums, and players. Meaning no ESPN NFL 2K6, no more NFL GameDay, and bye-bye NFL Blitz... The agreement covers consoles, PC, and handheld systems, as well as console online features... And, a final quote that shows EA is doing it just so they own't lose any of their precious money:...the license deals do not include smaller games such as Atari's Backyard Football; it's not subject to this agreement due to their numbers...So since the game isn't selling enough to hurt EA, they aren't effected. Meanwhile, EA's biggest competitor in football, ESPN Sports, is prohibited from continuing their [in many people's opinion superior] series. If that's not corporate greed, I don't know what is. And it certainly sounds like a monopoly to me. At least enough of one to ensure that no other football games will sell.
surian
Also, to the overworked people at EA. Quit your vulking job. I'm hoping that you are just joking. A lot of them probably have quit already, but those who have stayed are doing so becasue they love their job but also know when they are being mis-treated. These people do not deserve to be treated like this and saying "...then quit" is not a good response to the problem. There are laws against this kind of thing and the employees are finally doing something about EA's blatent disregard for these laws. If you got mugged on the street some night you wouldn't appreciate someone telling you to that the solution is to just stay off the streets from now on. The solution would be to find the guy who did it and punish him.

Dark0ne
Unfortunately the EA monopoly isn't going to get alleviated any time soon since one of their biggest, if not THE biggest competitor, Vivendi Universal is up the crapper in money and debt problems. Lets see how Middle-Earth Online does...
