bben46
When XP first came out, I jumped on the new 64 bit architecture Win XP Pro x64). I removed it and went back to the older Win98 in 3 weeks. After SP 1 I reinstalled the XP64. Still many of my older programs (including one that was required for work) did not work, and I went back to Win98 again. Several weeks later, a colleague told me he had our proprietary work program running on XP Pro, 32 bit. So I traded my 64 bit for a 32 bit version and got (almost) everything working. I still use it as I have had no real reason to move up to Vista. I still have win98 on a laptop for one work program that still will not run on Xp (it won't work in 2000 either). I will not get Win7 immediately, but I suspect I will get it within 6 months of when it is released. I will probably be building a new system about that time and it will likely be optimized for Win7. I hope the next Elder Scrolls is win7 64 bit compatible, or will run on a 64 bit linux system. I'm looking forward to the performance boost that 64 bit 'should' bring and finally being able to use more than 4g Ram.
dezdimona
Have had zero problems with Vista 64. XP cannot take advantage of the current generation of processors or ram upgrades. Also considering pretty much all games utilize dx10 now it is a forgone conclusion. Buying a new high spec PC to put XP on it is silly, especially if you are running an i7 or other quadcores.who said mine was high priced? why is it silly.your opinion is an opinion, calling others silly is uncalled for because their choise isn't your choise.God I'm glad I'm not soooo perfect as some people! Pineapplerum
I got XP on my built gaming computer because it was advised to me by the people who built my computer. That was a little over a year ago. I think there's been some improvements on Vista but I don't know if it's geared towards gaming. I like XP. I have Vista on my laptop but I use that one only for internet and the only games I play on there are the ones I can download free trials for from BigFish and those games run fine on it. It's a pretty cheap laptop, too.
exanimis
I started out with windows 3.0. It was a glorified typewriter. Most of my experience and knowledge on the workings of a PC came from crashing and re building my old windows 98. I now have five computers. Two run windows XP and I have never had a problem with either. One I am installing Umbutu in and will be testing that in a few weeks. I am actually running my old Win 98 hard drive in it until I get the Umbutu disk. Two of my laptops have windows Vista. It may be a good system but I do not like Vista, it has proven to be an over sized, bloating disaster for me.
Tchos
According to this (under "Problems"), Oblivion runs significantly faster on Vista with SP1 than it does on XP.

Tchos
That was a response to Pineapplerum, who wondered if Vista is geared toward gaming.
nosisab
It's just my own opinion, but there is no sense in comparing XP with Vista, maybe this can be made with the 7 (or the name it will be released). Vista is the transitional OS from the 32 to 64 bits, the same way the ill famed ME was, long ago, from 16 to the true 32 bit. Hopefully MS will learn from the errors and reclamations and do turn the Seven a worthwhile XP's successor. In time: XP64 shall not even be named a serious OS. RiderOfEternity
I don't know about modding in Vista, but playing mods I haven't had any problems that weren't also existent in XP. Same goes for every piece of software in general - 95% of apps work fine on my Vista, the other 5% only has problems because it's 64bit and the software engineers have been lazy in keeping compatibility. As for performance, yes Vista takes up more RAM, but RAM is dirt cheap these days - and the benefits that Vista's use of RAM brings far outweigh the problem. In terms of FPS hit, you may see a few less frames but it's nothing significant enough for you to avoid Vista all together. Furthermore, Vista's user interface is a lot, lot better than XP. Modders may find use especially in copying and pasting files all the time.
