Should I play Oblivion?

I've played some of Morrowind and hundreds of hours of Skyrim, and love them both. But there is still one in between that tend to get the shaft from the community.

So, should I play Oblivion, having enjoyed the others, and what mods are "essential"? I tend to thoroughly mod my playthroughs (SKSE, SUM patches etc.).

I've played Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim. Of them all, not counting graphics, Oblivion is, for me, the best of the lot. Finished Skyrim and have returned to playing Oblivion.

As per the "essential", you might want to try the looking at the top 100 mods. Depends on what you are looking for. Some people really get into the immersive and landscape mods.

Thanks to Wrye Bash, I am running 302 mods, batched down to 248.

I second this. Oblivion is my favorite, and I've played every Elder Scrolls game. With mods I can do a lot more with Skyrim, but I still launch Oblivion from time to time and play it.

Yes you should.

Three of my favorite mods are

Vampire Hunting - Order of the Virtuous Blood Expanded

Deadly Reflex (once you get it to work...you'll never return to vanilla combat)

Dwarven Ruins for Oblivion (search for Dwarven or Dwemer)

Of course you ought to play oblivion. I started with Morrowind but was entirely confused and did not care for the graphics. Then I started with Oblivion. [i have as yet to play Skyrim, but I plan on getting the game for Christmas.] I like Oblivion very much, in fact so much I'm starting to learn how to Mod for it. This is the first such role playing game I have ever been motivated to learn to mod for, and that is saying a lot.

I like the Trade and Commerce Mod. It makes selling your things in Oblivion more profitable.

The Bank of Cyrodill is another great mod. You can deposit money in the bank and earn interest off of it as well as have a deposit box which comes in really handy.

I also can not live without the Training Cave Mod. In there you have a land dreugh who does not attack, but you can train up all your combat and magic skills with the exception of block.

i played oblivion first, then morrowind, later on skyrim,

and i must tell you: say what you want of morrowind's exotic world, or the graphics of skyrim,

but only oblivion gives you that extravegant imperial feel (let's face it skyrim is all about mud, dirt and snow)
