Running games via Vortex or .exe

Not sure on this one. I downloaded a bunch of mods via Vortex, do i start the game in Vortex or can i just use the shortcut that the game put on my desktop to start up.

 

On a side note, no matter how the game starts up, when i go into my mods via the game menu, everything is there, but greyed with no info on the side panel. Not sure if playing via the desktop would be the same as playing via Vortex?

Normally, once things are set up in Vortex you don't need to run the game from Vortex. But some games require you to run another program to make mods work, even if you set them up in Vortex.

For most games, like Bethesda games, starting the game from Vortex is just for convenience.

If you are short on memory, it can help to close Vortex to free up resources.

Bear in mind - if you use something like SKSE or F4SE, you must start the game from that executable.

Thanks guys for the info. I play several different games, but at the moment i am playing Fallout 4. I played F4 till i cleared Concord and helped Tenpines Bluff by clearing the raiders from Corvega Water Plant by using the desktop shortcut, no issues, mods worked. Did the same scenario through Vortex and same result, so there is my answer, i can play this game via the desktop or Vortex. Will experiment with my other games to see what way works better with mods.

One final note: MO 2 uses a virtual file system for mods, which means MO 2 must be running when the game runs.

Tannin wrote MO 2 as well as Vortex. This is just one of the things he improved in Vortex; switching to a standard Windows facility Hard Links.

That's not true. Whatever is set in Vortex should stay even if you don't have Vortex running.
