If it's the Steam version you need to make a new Steam Library on the external drive and then tell Steam to move the game to the new Library. Otherwise important stuff won't get updated. Before I moved the game and mods to the external drive, the game was working just fine, but now it doesn't start anymore. I installed the game multiple times again, but that wasn't a help either. I manually deinstelled all mods in the stagging folder, instelled the game on the main drive, moved it trough Steam to the external and now the game is working again.
