PSA: How many base game actors per 10K radius active area ?

I enjoy creating solutions to generate additional random spawn encounters whilst not overloading the engine pipeline or generating good old spawn bloat CTDs. To help I have been mapping the Commonwealth to see how many AI actors the base game coughs up.

 

This is the vanilla base game with default 5 uGridsToLoad, automatically hopping the player between all 320 Commonwealth map marker travel points and doing a quest conditional fill on live actors (not corpses) in the 3d loaded radius, counting them and then unloading.

 

The actor count INCLUDES disabled actors that may be activated by quest trigger or EnableStateParent but EXCLUDES random encounters which do not manage to initialize before the player hops away. Also EXCLUDES actors between 10k and 15k away that would still be loaded in the "tobeunloaded" CellBuffer if the player had activated them by walking there.

 

Script takes ~ 50 minutes to run at 72fps. It often CTDs around the 300th Player.MoveTo demonstrating that even a totally clean system will eventually fall over. Probably memory or garbage collection.

 

The winner is GoodneighborExt02 with 137 live actors and 9 Random Encounter triggers, no wonder OE Xboxes fall over downtown.

 

For interiors (which this test run does not include), InstituteConcourse is the winner with 110 live actors (although 80 are disabled for quest activation).

If you want to run the test yourself the packed mod is attached.

 

Enable papyrus debug logging (howto in the wiki) for results and monitor Papyrus.0.log (I use mTail.exe) filter on SKK_MMACMainQuestScript as all you will see is an hour of load screens flipping.

 

If you suffer OCD best to not run this as every run is in different order and actor counts probably due to story manager + cell buffering.

To echo a discord query on this; Why does the test include DISABLED actors ?

 

1. Disabled actor 3d does not (partial/full ?) render so does not load the GFX pipeline to affect fps, BUT;

 

2. My focus is on SCRIPT and AI update performance, AND;

 

3. Disabled Actors still trigger their script events (e.g. OnLoad still triggers when the object/actor is disabled), AND;

 

4. At some point they may activate by trigger (altho how many concurrent is undetectable), AND;

 

5. Disabled (and unloaded persistent) Actors AI still react/process SOME updates (not sure all but I have logged some, like follow package on player teleport) unless EnableAI(false) is specifically called on them, SO;

 

Whilst most folks fixate on FPS which of course is primary UX, I am more interested in the underlying AI and script performance that may nor may not be coupled to FPS. Disabled actors may not affect FPS but can affect AI and script performance. Reflect on that and how to minimise the impact when we attach scripts to actors and hope disable removes overhead.
