Struggling with two Vortex installations

Recommended Posts

I have two copies of the same game, one purchased on Steam and one purchased on Microsoft Game pass. The Game pass copy is notoriously hard to mod so I wanted to be as carefcul about my alterations as possible. So I could control my changes separately I decided to install two separate copies of Vortex, in two separate directories, one to control each game.

OK, it turns out that Vortex will secretly delete any other copy of itself, even if it's installed into a different directory, and copy mod data and so forth from the other installation and mess things up. I'm really upset about this undocumented behaviour. I have a hard enough time fighting Microsoft's crappy game security that messses up my mods, I shouldn't have to fight Vortex as well. Is there any way I can stop Vortex from doing this?

Vortex is not designed to be installed twice, nor is it designed to manage two versions of the same game.

Neither of those behaviours has a purpose. What reason could you have for managing two versions of the same game that is not accomplished by using profiles?

Vortex stores quite a lot of important information in the Appdata folder and does not allow you to specify a different folder, so both copies would be trying to overwrite each other, regardless of where you install the program files.

If, for some reason, you NEED to have two copies of the same game managed you'll need to have one on Vortex and one on MO2, or use two different Windows Accounts in order to have two different AppData folders.

And it's not that this is an "undocumented behaviour". Rather it's that no one told you that you can install the program in two different places.

what makes you think this is "undocumented"?

you have only one appdata folder - vortex puts its stuff in appdata - so you install a second version guess whats going to happen?
