Guild Wars

My personal opinion on Guild Wars will not be the topic of this post (yet) - too much time since the last beta event i was able to participate in (December), I'll have to see how much has changed since back then.

As far as I know, here in Germany GW is meant to be released on 28th April, I'd expect something similar for the UK.

Although I haven't played EQ2, I can safely say that if you can't decide between GW and EQ2, there's no answer to it. GW is far from what other MMORPG's practice. You have a quite limited amount of classes (six), and there are no additional professions, crafting skills or whatever. The game is solely focused on doing a good job at rather action-oriented RPing (which will hopefully commence once the game has been released - BWE's I experienced were overcrowded by "SELL SWORD DMG 12 FOR 3 HIDES!!!1111"-idiots which prevented any roleplaying effectively from the very beginning) with an extra ounce of attention for PvP (sort of greatly extended and more sophisticated DII on a MMORPG basis - surprise, taking into account that ArenaNet was founded by ex-Blizzard designer ).

EQ 2 and GW should be nowhere near being comparable.

Hmm... I was considering EQ2 as my next MMORPG... but Guild Wars does sound impressive. Well, I know it's not technically a MMORPG but I like being able to play on my own on a game now and then. To people who have actually played EQ2, is it worth just skipping it and going straight onto Guild Wars? Or is EQ2 still worth it?

Also, is there any info on when Guild Wars is going to be released? Will it be another one of these, "oh, US gets it first, Europe has to wait another six months" deals?

One of the things I didn't like was being able to jump in straight away with a high level character... seems to take the point out of it somewhat.

Ya, im pretty sure the U.S. gets it first, as it is being released on the 28th of April here. You can jump in with a high level character, but it is only for PvP. You can play a roleplaying character, level them up, get different skills, ect. You can also do PvP with a roleplaying character. As Morgoth said there is a limited amount of character classes, but there are tons of skills for each class, and you can have two classes (A primary and secondary) which makes for a huge ammount of creativity and customization. Although I only played through 2 BETAs I constantly found myself making new characters and using different class combonations, to see what suited me best. Making new characters is something I NEVER do and for this game to want me to make new characters is saying something. Not to mention the graphics are pretty :D .

ArenaNet added some chat filters for the April BWE. You can select one or more from these channels:

All, Team, Guild, Trade, Emotes

The chat is color-coded with a different color for each channel.

Sure all of the trading wasn't confined to the Trade channel but if you're in an open-air market in a town, wouldn't you expect to hear people hawking their wares?

I like being able to play on my own on a game now and then.

You can hire (for free) NPC henchmen in the town areas to go questing with you. The four henchie choices are Monk, Archer, Mage, and Warrior. The maximum party size is four. I did some of the quests with three NPC henchmen. It's like Morrowind with a companion mod. The henchies don't say much but they sure are brave!

Yeah, I read about the henchmen, sounds good. Is their AI good? Aka, I won't be losing them because they run into a wall at a funny angle or something, will I? ;)

So, high level starter characters can only be used for PvP, and not for the usual missions and such?

According to Amazon.co.uk, the UK actually get it on April 22nd. :D That would certainly be a nice change, wouldn't it? Either way I heard on a game show that we'll definitely have it the same month as the US, which is nice.

Yes, NCSoft are going for a global release on the 28th of April.

The henchman can generally take care of themselves -- they'll use healing spells when their health is low and the henchman you choose (warrior, healer, archer or mage) will perform to their professions job adequetly. You'll find that the NPCs party members will often be more intelligent than other players...

...and I'm sorry, but it's always the foreigners I group with who don't understand what the hell they're doing. Its not racist, it's fact.

Yes, you can only use the high level starter character for PvP. The AI are quite intelligent. During a team based mission there were no teammates for me so the game gave me a henchman to use. He actually saved me several times, healing and ressurecting me, and healing himself when needed all while fighting enemies. I also made a ranger character who had a "pet" stalker (a panther like cat) who attacked my enemies when I did and always kept up with me. Not once did it get stuck on walls, trees, ect. Finally some intelligent companions!

Very nice!

I had a proper look at the info on the site as well as the "unaltered" screenshots and I'm very impressed. :D I'll almost certainly be getting this.

When we do we should all post our character names. Maybe we could get together for a few missions eh? :P

Just a shame that only humans are available for play so far...

That sounds awesome. I pre-ordered it so I already have my character names set up. A couple of mine are X X C L B X X and Rando Khan. Ive also got a guild goin. The Enlightened Coalition of Shires. Ahahaha what a gay name. Humans are the only race, but they are going to come out with more in expansions which feature their own chapters of the story.

  • 2 weeks later...
Has everyone got their game yet? Mine arrived from the folks at NCSoft right on the launch date yesterday and I've been playing it for a little while. Level 8 Elementalist/Mesmer. What path is everyone else taking?

Nice. I've got mine on pre-order at Amazon first class, it should arrive tomorrow. ^^ For some reason the release date at Amazon was the 29th, go figure.

I'm not 100% sure on my character, I mean, the site had precious little info on the game (which I found strange) and I didn't know where else to go to get info! I'll most likely be going for a heavy warrior style character though to start with, as always. ;)
