Qwaxalot
Im running Vista 64 bit. And no matter what my video settings are, even VERY LOW doesnt help. it starts to lag, hard once NPCs are in view. Also, i typed tdt to view my FPS and it says it went through 64 processes when i played for about 5-10 minutes. How do i throw up the Dxdiag report? a "Dxdiag" report: Run (XP) or Start (Vista), type in "dxdiag" (without the quotes), save the report to a desktop text file (default). Copy and paste the results (the whole thing) here in your thread.

I defrag before adding a mod and after uninstall.I also clean my drive once a week. You'd be surprised at the the responce time you'll regain! Yes, as strange like it may seems. Fallout 3 has the same issues (indeed almost all games have but it is worse in the Beth engines). So if your computer have integrated sound into the motherboard, it's almost certain it is the problem. Try out first disabling the sounds in the Oblivion.ini file at c:\Documents\....\Oblivion folder. if the issue is gone you know the guilt. Unfortunately there is nothing I know to solve or workaround that issue, other than using a good 'off board' sound card. And yes, I know it from self experience. Edit: Anyway, if that X3 on your microprocessor means three cores you should look at the link posted by bben (the tweak guide one)... there are some very good advices there, including how to enable multicore processing in that game (that is not default and can be done only directly editing the .ini file). PS edit: To understand the "why" sound may impact the video in these cases. It's not even because the CPU does the bulk of sound processing, yet worse, sound IRQs will stop anything and everything the CPU is doing so to attend to them (something that should be done by the sound card, not the CPU). When playing movies and common applications no visible (or audible) issues arises, the same is not valid in the highly demanding applications, like games. The Bethesda engines are specially affected by the "onboard sound syndrome".
Prenihility
I actually checked that section of the tweak guide, where it shows where the multithreading options are. There are only 5 or 6 there. Also, doesnt says how to enable it (as far as i remember). It just says that GameBryo does take advantage of multiple cores. Also, which section do i have to change to "0" in the .ini file? Also, i have tried disabling all background services, no performance difference. Also, im having a bit of a problem...if i type in dxdiag, it cant find it, no results are shown. I even tried "msconfig" just for the hell of it, nothing comes up...
bben46
In the Oblivion.ini, a 0 means OFF and a 1 means ON. If the feature is turned OFF, that means the game will not use it. so try turning all of the multithreading features ON. Use the editor to change the 0 to a 1 to turn it ON, then be sure to save it when you exit. Right now I am working with 2 others with a similar problem. Game has slowed to a crawl. All are using 64 bit systems. different processors and video 1 ATI, 2 Nvidia. 2 have only 1G of Ram. you have sufficient ram I am beginning to suspect a driver problem. The Dxdiag report would help quite a bit. Have you updated your video drivers lately? If so, what was the old version and what is the new version? How about audio? Have you tried shutting it down to see if there is any effect? Go to the lower left corner. Click on the vista icon there. In the menu that comes up, click on runin the box type dxdiag
Prenihility
Hopefully this is what you need. My drivers are up to date, the date May 15th, 2009, so they are the newest drivers for my card. I have no idea what my older drivers were. My current ones: 8.620.0.0 Oh, and i enabled some of the "Thread" options. Such as enableThread Morpher, and (something with the word "blood" in it, i forgot) And debugThread, doesnt help at all.As for audio, i dont know where to disable it, dont know which line of text it is. And sorry for the two uploads, they r the same.

For the audio issue To test, in the ...\Documents\mygames\oblivion\Oblivion.ini file locate: bMusicEnabled=1bSoundEnabled=1 And change both 1's to 0 For the DXDIAG, copy and paste the DXDIAG report here in your thread. I don't think the debug ones are necessary to change. But it probably couldn't hurt.
Prenihility
It wont let me copy and paste it...and i uploaded the whole thing, anyway. And someone already has downloaded it. Source=My computer, i guess. Um.....btw, i know this is COMPLETELY off topic, but my desktop background turned black, and it keeps asking me for an activation key for windows and it says it isnt genuine.....Just..err. throwing that in there, and no, my OS isnt pirated, its a store bought computer. bben46
You need to get the windows problem fixed before working on the game problem. Fixing the windows might solve the game problems also. I did look at your Dxdiag list. The drivers look to be up to date. However, sometimes new drivers are worse then the older ones. Although I haven't seen anything about this particular driver set. You might check on the ATI sites to see if anyone has reported anything. - or do a search on your drivers and video board. Microsoft has a telephone line for people who have a problem with activation keys not working. The phone number is given in the activation part of the program that tells you your code was not valid. I have used this on XP and it was a simple process. BTW, even a 'store bought' computer can have a pirate OS. Often when a computer is taken in for repair the tech installs his 'Bench' version, then either neglects or forgets to change the code to the proper one before giving it back. Usually there is a sticker somewhere on the case with the Activation code for your copy of windows. However, I have seen some where the OEM 'forgot' to put the sticker on. Or the sticker was peeled off by the end user because they thought it looked tacky. Look for characters you might have mistaken when typing in the code - O, 0, G and Q. 1 and I, M & N, V & Y, U & V, 2 & Z etc. As I am a little dyslexic I often transpose letters & numbers . M & W are a problem for me as are lower case b, p, d & q - a spell checker is an absolute necessity. Check the windows support site for more info on activating problems. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931573
