Vortex just exploded into my face

I always liked, how easy I could manage mods with vortex, but I am going to remove it now for good.

Today, vortex told me there was an update, clicking the update button resulted in an error message, showing only for a brief second. The link to vortex on my desktop no points into nothingness, the exe file is no longer there. Windows still tells me, vortex was installed, but it is not. I had a look at the windows error protocol, and tried to look up the error message again, but I was unable to find it. 

It is very concerning, that this software 'just dies' using its build in update function, and it makes me very uncomfortable using vortex in the future.

Is there any way, to recover from this? Anything to check on what has happened? Or am I back at squre one, reinstalling my modded games, starting all over again?

Tried downloading the new version and just installing it?

Will I need to save any configuration before that?

Updating doesn't affect the configuration.  Installing the new version over the old shouldn't either.

Where can I find the configuration to backup it? I understand it 'should' work but it also 'should not have' hossed itself up so badly by pressing on updatebutton in the interface.
