Wash that vortex right out of my hair

Hi folks.  Im using 1.9.12.0 Vortex and Im having an issue with removing it and reinstalling.  It keeps installing things that I want removed - indeed why Im trying to reinstall vortex in the first place.

Even my collection isnt safe - vortex keeps installing mod rules for mods I dont own.

I usually use the vortex/addremove to remove files.  But vortex leaves a ton of files.  I hunted down every file with the word vortex in the title.  Reinstalled Fallout 4 and Vortex and it came back.  Somewhere in my computer like a virus is hidden info Vortex is using that I cant scrub.  Even disconnecting from the internet and then trying to install didnt help.  Oh and each time I delete the fallout folder from my documents too.

Ive also started getting Unhandled exception "EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION" at 0x7FF71D0589A3 Fallout4.exe+03F89A3 crash to desk top now after a few minutes of play and esp on trying to load a save.

Im not sure if this is two problems or one at this point.  Its been 3 days since I could play fallout because of this.

I was quite happy with my mod archive I maintained. Every mod since I started modding was in there. My First Mods being one to make Preston spammy, a weight increase, and a preset I had no idea how to get to work :P
It was over 900 gigs - some 2000 mods.

When I was installing some mods I accidentally dropped my archive into Vortex. Out of amusement I trid to get them running (I think I managed around 800 of them sort of working together). But overall this broke Vortes something fierce. So after amusing myself I deleted the mods from Vortex, couldnt, so I went to reinstall Vortex.

What I didnt know is every mod thats placed into Vortex gets a file added to it - saying its managed by vortex. When I removed Vortex it scrubbed my drive of every single mod. Since it wasnt deleted normally the Windows options to recover it failed. I had a few empty folders left and that was all.

I search in my mod archive files for the vortex word and delete the files now. But it hurt to lose 4-5 years of mods. Mods I got from translating Japanmese and Korean websites to download. I havent the foggiest where I can find them again. All my lost anime :(

So all Im using is my build collection with some city plans Im trying to work on.

Im using a HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop 15z-ec200.  Processor is an AMD Ryzen 5 5600H with Radeon Graphics 3.30 GHz.  6 cores. 16 gb of ram.  64bit system. with Windows 10 Home.

Your Vortex database is stored at %appdata%\Vortex - if you want to fully start over you can delete that folder. I am fairly sure all the issues you're having a related to the mods you've installed and not Vortex itself. For Fallout 4 nothing is installed without your taking an action to initiate it.

Sure it can be.

You ASSUME "Everything" is addressed.

Local Low

 Roaming

Documents

Vortex

Vortex mod

Vortex staging

There are at LEAST 6 Vortex folders. Perhaps you overlooked something? keep in mind there are other folders that do not say Vortex...they start with the letter B 🙂

You want to go conspiracy theory, that's on you, but ME, I would assume it was a missed file that is indexing past files. Then again I pay attention to anything that has installed, by date, and make note for future references, because, like you, I had reoccuring data that I SWORE was a sign of intrusion, only to find out ...and this was a few years ago, that the documents file has data 🙂 Not saying your issue is as innocuous, but I am saying it's far easier to point a finger forward than back

  • 2 weeks later...

I formatted the drive I had vortex installed on.  I searched the computer for any file with the word 'vortex' in it and deleted them all.  I defragged the drive in case that helped.

When I reinstalled vortex it already knew where I keep Fallout (nonstandard placement) even though Fallout 4 was not installed.  It got upset because them mods I had installed a couple of days ago werent installed.  Oh and it knew my account on Vortex and my ini settings without me telling it.  I havent found any appdata folders that its hiding in.

Everything Vortex "knows" is stored under %appdata%\Vortex.

When Vortex is running it automatically looks through the install manifests for Steam, GOG, Epic, EA Play and Xbox Game Pass. This is how it would know where a game is (if you deleted the appdata folder).

If that location is invalid, you probably didn't uninstall the game properly and there are still references to it.
