What's your favorite meal?

I do wonder if it's possible to have just one favorite meal. It seems that favorite is a sliding scale between longing for something and then longing for something else.

For instance, have you ever had A&W cheese curds? While I love cheese curds and cheese sticks in general (some better than others), there's a magic in a large bag of freshly cooked A&W cheese curds. My girlfriend and I used to enjoy going to A&W from time to time and ordering four large bags of them each. Then we'd sit in the car and eat as much as we could before getting full, and then we'd take the remainder home and refrigerate/freeze them. Then, when we got the desire for them again, she'd pour oil into a skillet and fry them anew (never microwave). They'd be just as good refried as fresh.

There are a few places that make good real-meat cheeseburgers, but not many. While A&W, Steak & Shake and a few other places serve actual steak meat burgers, the best ones are those you make yourself with the fattiest hamburger you can buy. Then you season it with chicken or beef bouillon or the seasoning of your choice and fry it not-too-thick so it gets crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Add your favorite cheese and fresh bread, maybe mayonnaise or whatever condiments you like, a bit of fresh lettuce and tomato slices, and the simple burger becomes a wonderful meal.

Or you can buy a freshly baked French bread loaf from a baker, get some fresh eggs and the cheese of your choice, and make scrambled eggs with cheese and fresh bread. Simple but utterly delicious.

The list of any things you can make at any given time which qualify as favorite meal is tremendous.

I'm going to list a favorite meal directed at Drakefell's request that the meal be specified in Spanish.

There's an Argentinian meal called Milanesas con papas fritas (Milanesas with french fries).

Here's how you make them:

1. Go to the butcher and order thinly sliced chipped steaks. Buy a huge stack of them, maybe 8" tall and and-plate-thick wide. Have the butcher make them around 1/4" thick at most. You need it to be thin enough that it'll cook very, very quickly.

2. Prepare the following:

  • a plate with whipped eggs (both yolks and whites)
  • a plate with a pile of white flour
  • a plate with a pile of seasoned bread crumbs

3. Prepare the milanesas

  • Smother each steak on both sides with flour
  • Smother each steak on both sides with the eggs
  • Smother each steak on both sides with the bread crumbs

4. Prepare the French fries

Peel and slice a bunch of white potatoes, ideally large pieces but only around a quarter inch thick (thin enough they'll be crispy on outside and juicy on inside, but never raw. Raw potatoes are horrible).

5. Fill a deep frier with oil and preheat it. Be sure it's hot! When the oil is ready, put the potatoes in it and let them fry, keeping an eye on them to be sure they don't burn.

6. Get a large skillet and put a hearty amount of oil in it, and preheat it. The oil must be very hot, burning hot. Do not put the meat into the skillet until the oil is very, very hot.

7. Once the oil is ready, put a milanesa into the super hot oil and let it cook for maybe ten seconds. Then flip it and cook it about another ten seconds. Carefully remove it with a sharp fork and cook the next and the next in the stack until they're all cooked. Be careful not to splash oil on yourself!

8. When the French fries are ready, drain them of oil and put them on a serving platter. Salt them.

Serve Milanesas con papas fritas! You can, if you wish, squeeze lemon oil onto the milanesas. They're good either straight or with lemon juice (just a bit, squeezed fresh, on each milanesa).

I was watching my youtube videos today and eating stale crackers, the only thing that came to mind was "¡Esta es la vida!"

(("¡Esta es la vida!" is "This is the life!"))

That's because there's a mystical quality in some foods called munchie.

People are taught about salty, sweet, meaty, sour, etc. But school does not teach of the critical quality munchie. It's an important food aspect which must be consumed at least a few times a week for the sake of sanity, contemplation, serenity and spiritual fulfilment.
