Gaming The Forum Ranking System

Does anyone else find it annoying that some folks can create BS threads, reply to said threads, reply to other threads idiotically and in doing so artificially increase forum ranking? I know it may not bother some, but as George Carlin said when expressing his discontent about folks incessantly asking him what time it was, "It bothers me, man."

Anyways, the post count doesn't increase necessarily, as with the word games sub-forum, but ranking does increase per post. So, a user could potentially become crowned a Grandmaster without contributing any useful substance. It's well earned by most and not by some. I equate it, somewhat, to the Purple Heart. If you tell me you were awarded the Purple Heart, I'm going to ask you how you got it because anyone can get that award. You could've been looking for a place to piss while on patrol and stepped on a land mine and chances are, you're getting the Purple Heart. Posthumously in most cases but some folks live, minus a limb or two. Whereas, most times it's awarded to veterans that actually did something to deserve it and sometimes comes coupled with the Navy Cross or some other medal achieved for valiant efforts in battle. But some manage to slip through and undeservedly relish in the prestige and honor the Purple Heart invokes. The same goes for the Grandmaster rank for Nexus forum users it seems.

I just wanted to point out that things aren't always as they appear.

I wouldn't get too wound up about the reputation system

Where did I say anything about the reputation system? That's a separate rant altogether. Just ask @zcul. But I'm over that and possibly soon to be over Nexus.

Nice place you got here but it's not for me. Too many whiners, weirdos and pretentious posers.

You have a nice day.

I get, I do. And that's all well and good when it's given to deserving members. But some seem to be able to earn esteem simply by proxy, which is only a slight exaggeration, but that's all I was saying. I don't know though. Perhaps I was attaching too much credibility to the rank of Grandmaster. I do tend to overthink things. But when I first came to the forums and seen folks with that rank, I assumed that that user at least had an inkling of an idea as to what they were talking about. Now... not so much. Live and learn, right? Pardon me for getting caught up in labels and I encourage others not to as well.

You're welcome whether you mean it or not because, to be honest, your post almost looks like it's a copy/paste from somewhere. If it weren't for the joining of the words after and all in the 2nd to last sentence, I'd tend to think it was a little too perfect, auto-generated in fact. One never knows nowadays. AI's making it a brave, new confusing world. To quote Maynard James Keenan, "Nothing factual, nothing fictional, interchangeable. This is the age of confusion."

But there I go... overthinking things again.

I do, of course, mean it and wouldn't have said it otherwise. The "afterall" was indeed a typo and the post wasn't a copy/paste.

You're not wrong in thinking that the various rankings, badges etc. can indicate whether or not a particular user is experienced/knowledgeable in the subject matter to which they're replying. However, it is a single data point and may suggest nothing more than their desire to be sociable.

There does exist a chance that I am a bot, you never know these days, as you say. Speaking of, your post is exactly what a synth would say...hmmm

Anyway, friend, do take care and have a great day!

I don't even know what a synth is so that's probably untrue.

Fair point. Cheers.

I just got it. A synth! Or an AI, of course! I just got baked so a little slow on the uptake at present.

It's a life thing. You know how you can work with people who zoom up through the ranks and get promotion and actually know zero at all about what it is they're doing? They're careerists. They choose any career; they don't care what, because actually the career is having a career. It might be that forums get the same effect and that there are indeed forum careerists... And now I don't know whether to find that extremely amusing or rather sad... which in turn reminds me of Portal II...

And no, as for me - I'm not most definitely not AI - if I was you should demand your money back! 🤣

Perhaps. I've lived long enough to learn that folks do things for a variety of reasons. Their agendas and motivations being as unique as a fingerprint. People are indeed strange sometimes. I find it amusing yet sad and highly interesting. I'm a weird guy.

I'm not an AI either but rather an OI, as in Organically Intelligent. Or full of myself, one of the two.
