What keeps Shadowmere respawning?

Recommended Posts

If Shadowmere is dismissed, it will stay where it is dismissed until that place resets. Then Shadowmere will respawn outside Falkreath Sanctuary. I tried to make a simple Mod to stop it from respawning. I looked up its data in CK and unchecked its "Respawn" flag. However, after I saved the change and made an ESP from it, Shadowmere still kept  respawning in game. I tried to compare Shadowmere with Frost which doesn't respawn in game but failed to figure out what leads to Shadowmere's respawn. I will appreciate it if someone can help me figure it out.

The respawn flag on the Shadowmere reference record says that it's inventory should respawn when the cell it is in resets.

I don't understand enough the cell reset mechanism to help you further, unfortunately.

I am aware of inventory respawn flag cos it is a massive pain in ass for non-follow wardrobe mod and needs to be handled, programmatically for a small footprint,  but looking very loosely at the ShadowmereRef, I found no papyrus scripts, so when a cell resets, it might be spawning at the default editor location, like all other npc, horses, that for one reason or another, do not have persistence ,  etc so we are going into terrority of the game engine here. But I did not do this and just thought of it now, is the REF marked has persistent? Dunno forgot to check it, but it might be that simple.. but where did you last leave it now.. maybe respawning at set default editor  location is a good idea.

Isn't it because Shadowmare is specified as Alias (Quest - DB07, DLC2EbonyWarriorQuest)?

Do you mean Shadowmere won't respawn anymore if the quests you mentioned are completed?

No, that's not what I mean. What I mean is that a reference specified as Alias may not change state even if you unmark the respawn checkbox. I can't say for sure, but I think this phenomenon has nothing to do with completing the quest.

So what should I do to force a reference specified as Alias to be updated if its basic ID is changed by a Mod?

Will creating a new save with the Mod work?

Well you could make a duplicate of a normal horse, change it's appearance to Shadowmeres and add any abilities Shadowmere has, then disable Shadowmere and enable your replacement at the same spot. Might be easier than playing around with quest aliases.

I actually tried it.
To begin with the conclusion, Shadowmere did not respawn.

First, I confirmed that Shadowmere respawns in Vanilla Game. Even if I switched to different horse or Shadowmere died, Shadowmere respawned in "DarkbrotherhoodSanctuaryExterior" after 10 days. Next, as you did, I unchecked "Respawn" of the Base object, saved it as an esp, and enabled this mod. After loading Skyrim, I rode a summoned horse (my own creation) to make "switched state", got off the horse, and let time pass until the cell (DarkbrotherhoodSanctuaryExterior) were reset. Then I went to "DarkbrotherhoodSanctuaryExterior" and rode Shadowmere. After that, I did the same thing I verified in Vanilla Game.

I went to another location away from "DarkbrotherhoodSanctuaryExterior", changed the horse, left this cell, and let 10 days pass. When I returned to the cell where I got off Shadowmere, Shadowmere remained there. Then, 10 days after I killed Shadowmere and moved to another location, Shadowmere's corpse disappeared, but Shadowmere did not respawn even when I went to "DarkbrotherhoodSanctuaryExterior".

This means that unchecking "Respawn" was effective. It does not seem to be related to Alias.

Please check the following two things.
1. The Shadowmere used in the test play is generated as a reference with "Respawn" unchecked.
2. You are not using any other mods that modify Shadowmere or anything related to Shadowmere.
