In driving games, one thing I love doing is seeing what results I can get out of cars not really known for their racing exploits. One of my favourite ways to do this is to propell them to insane speeds, and drag-race them against modern supercars. One model that I've always loved tuning is the good old Volkswagen Beetle, extremely light, technically simple, fairly aerodynamic for it's age, cheap to aquire and often portrayed as extremely tunable, it's the ideal car for doing iredeemably stupid tuning experiments, and in Forza Horizon, a game it's grown on me enormously since I passed it's shockingly bad first three hours, I have done just that. On launch day, I bought a 1967 Beetle, whiped the engine out, fitted a fresh engine from last year's Golf GTI, and then tuned it beyond what I've ever tuned a punchbuggy before. I lowered it to the ground, fitted huge rear tyres, increased it's horsepower to roughly 400, stripped every nut and bolt it didn't need, and painted it bright red. The goal was simple: pure. speed.

Horizon has speed cameras posted through it's map, when you go through them, it records your car and speed, and then posts it on a leaderboard. I am, after over a week, still the fastest beetle anywhere in the game, and I am starting to think of it as a bit of a world record. I hope someone steps up and challenges me, I'd love to race off against a really great bug tuner, but for now, I own the fastets recorded speeds of any Beetle in Horizon, and I feel a degree of pride about that. I also strongly suspect I own the fastest speed for a four-door car in my Mercedes S-Class, but that's just not the same. The S-Class is an extremely fast car already, it's got a truly Herculean six and a half litre V12 turbo engine, it should be fast, I just made it a bit faster. The Beetle can only do 120 ish KMH as stock, mine does well over 320. As stock it had 54 horsepower, now it has well, I don't know, about 350 I think. That's what I get a kick out of, I took something small and made it, just for a moment, feel very big.

The one in Forza does backfire a helluva lot. Pretty much every gearshift BANG! huge fireball from both exhausts, I eventually painted some scorchmarks on the back and a little warning exclamatipon mark. Maybe that's why it's so fast, thermojet propulsion.
