Vindekarr
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a311/SanativeStigma/clap.gif http://www.sherv.net/cm/emoticons/drink/champagne.gif Is it at all disturbing to you that I literally know the full history of the tradition of spraying champagne? The 24 Hours Of Le Mans is a car race. Infact it is arguably THE car race. It happens once every year(it happened last weekend) and has done for the past 81 years, it's incredibly hard, but has a vast prize, and is such an old tradition that nearly all racing drivers dream of even driving in it-that alone is enough for some people. Car makers spend tens of millions making one-off prototypes just for a chance of winning, and a lot of innovations we take for granted owe their existance to said prototypes. Above all it's about survival; each car a team enters has 3 drivers assigned to it, which they can alternate between at will. This is because the race lasts for 24 hours uninterupted; no breaks for sleeping or repairs, you either stay on your proverbial feet, or you're eliminated. You CAN fix damage to your car, refuel, change tyres, and replace fatigued or injured drivers, but they're not going to wait for you-the show goes on around you and any time you spend stopped, costs you. Sleep is out of the question; race cars need constant maintenance meaning the pit crew get no sleep, and drivers are required to stand ready when not driving, 24 hours of hard work and no sleep. To make matters worse it's held on one of the world's most dangerous circuits-Circuit De La Sarthe in France, during Summer, when it frequently rains. When all this combines you've essentially got the hardest, most unpleasent, most dangerous car race of them all, the so called torture test. As you'd expect, surviving long enough to see the dawn is special in itself-usually only 30-ish of the 56 cars finish. Winning, is essentially the ultimate achievement for any racing driver; this is the everest of racing. And fittingly it's here that champagne spraying began. In 1967, American racing legend Dan Gurney randomly started spraying chamagne everywhere after winning the race-the first win for an American, let alone an American in an American car. And there you go, an immense boring wall of text answering a question nobody asked or was interested in, enjoy! naomis8329
Since this is often the place for bad news and problems, I'll just dump this here  A good friend of the family took his own life in the early hours of yesterday morning. We're all doing ok. No sympathy asked for here or required. No discussion of the rights and wrongs asked for here or required. Just want to remind you all, not that you need reminding I'm sure, to treat those you're close to as being as precious as they are, because you never know when they won't be here any more. It's no huge epiphany, it's no world changing philosophy, it's just a gentle nudge. Do something good for someone you care about for no apparent reason. A little more light in the world never goes amiss. Whether you want it or no you have my condolences on your loss, nothing I can say will make the pain any less except to say, we're here for you my friend should you need to vent. I'm here if you need to vent :) my contact details are on my profile. On what you were saying I do agree wholeheartedly as I too have lost too many people to suddenly and it is only then you realise all the things you wanted to say but didn't have the time to do so. With that in mind I would also add, treat every day as your last, live brightly, smile often, love without censure and make sure you treat those around you with the respect you would wish to receive yourself. Vindekarr
Well, today Australia has a new PM(our overall civic leader) This is excellent news. The former PM is Julia Gillard, who rose to PM rank through party in-fighting rather than a democratic vote, and then spent her brief tenure completely embarrassing herself and her country on a world stage. She also made history by becoming, according to approval rating, the single most unpopular political figure in Australian politics in the last 30 years. She was a misandrist, a liar, and an incompetent leader, and we're all better off without her. It's funny, you know. In our political system, each of the two parties has a leader, and should that party win enough votes, the party leader becomes the Prime Minister. Kevin Rudd was elected as Prime Minister by democratic vote; Julia Gillard gained power by covertly gathering support within her own party and then requesting a vote for a change of party leader(which is voted on only by party members, most of which were Gillard cronies) This allowed her to become PM without being democratically elected. As you can imagine it wasn't a very popular decision; her political career would have ended in September with the federal election, given her comically low approval rating(23%) but, hey, lying b**** is gone now. I'm hardly the only Aussie who cracked open a beer to celebrate.
