I've nearly finished The Stolen Throne by David Gaider, and I am so infuriated with the events near the end. The book is about Maric and Loghain before the events of Dragon Age: Origins, and I thought it was very well done right up until this particular part.

Plot spoilers and rant incoming...

So, Maric, Loghain, Rowan (Maric's betrothed, but Loghain's love interest) and Katriel (Maric's love interest, and an elven spy working for the enemy) finally emerge out of the Deep Roads and get back to the rebel army. There they have a big battle with the Orlesians, get defeated, but then fight back with the help of Gwaren's populace. Meanwhile, Katriel goes to Denerim to inform her employer that she no longer wants to serve him (preferring to switch to the rebel's side, and poisons the guy at the same time) and then returns to Gwaren.

Before she arrives, Loghain reveals to Maric that he had Katriel followed (to confirm his suspicions of her) and that she was working for the enemy. Maric doesn't want to believe it. Katriel then arrives and enters the tent, where Maric states that he knows she went to Denerim. She doesn't deny it, and explains that she was working for the enemy, and one of the rebel's major defeats (hundreds of people died) was her fault. She says that she can't take it back, but that she still loves Maric. However, Maric is so enraged that he runs her through with his sword before realising what he'd done.

Now, in these few paragraphs, that seems justified. But, the problem is that it is so freaking depressing! Come on, I understand where this is coming from, but WHY does it always have to end like this? The romance was really well done, the build up to it was superb, the characters' motivations and misgivings were interesting and I enjoyed it a lot. I was really hoping for it to somehow work out properly and have a happy ending... and then this section came along and f***ed it all up. I believe I have ranted before in this topic about these types of events, and I shall do so again.

This story had a perfect setup - one I would have remembered fondly. Now, however, that my hopes for the characters have been dashed bloodily against a brick wall, I'm debating whether or not to pick up the book again. I was sooo happy with it, I really liked it and I was excited that I'd finally found a book that ended the way I wanted... but no. That is impossible. Sad, depressing endings seem to be the only way that authors can leave a lasting effect on the reader. NO! That is not how it is! I was expecting something completely different, especially from the lead writer of Dragon Age. Why did he do this?

I feel like s#*! now. That's all this book has accomplished for me. Why should I continue this story? No clue.

@Kool

either do i, you can still get it replaced if its still under contract.

I should be able to get an upgrade since it's probably been about two or so years (It's an older phone anyway. Was my mom's from 2010 I think. She didn't like it, uses a flip phone instead).

Starbound seems like it's already doing pretty good here on the Nexus. I don't know why you would want to mod a game in early beta, but it's nice to see it's already getting quite a few mods.
There's always already a nudity mod, oh Nexus. How did I not expect that? :facepalm:

Edit: Woops, I said always, though either way it's true. There is ALWAYS a nude mod.

Wait, does starbound already have a nexus?

The answer to that is yes.

Why right now though? It just opened an early beta.

Oh well, nude mods ahoy.
