I installed Fallout 3 on Windows 10. I wanted to get back to working on a mod I started for Fallout 3. I decided to see if it would work!

I put the Fallout 3 CD in the Blu-Ray DVD RW drive.

I opened the folders and found Setup. I clicked on it.

The Fallout Launcher pix popped up. Another window popped up. It said the game could not be installed. And asked if I wanted to check on the Internet to see if there was any way to get it to work. Windows 10 asked that!

I wasn't connected to the Internet. I was a little down hearted. I clicked No. Because I was not connected to the Internet. I did a bunch of tests to see if I could bypass the start up launcher. I remembered I had saved a fully working set up on a back up drive.

I installed the whole folder. Something was bugging me. Something about the saved Fallout 3 folders contents seemed incorrect. After multiple failures to get the game to start I wanted to cry. Yeah! I actually felt like crying.

In my unhappy state I just started clicking and opening folders inside the main folder. To reminisce I guess. I saw a familiar icon in one of the folders. I clicked on it. The FOMM window popped up with a message that told me it could not find the proper file to launch. Saddened again.

I clicked and popped up folders just like I used to when I was trying to figure out all the tweaks and tricks. I kind of was in mod download shock.

I remember how many days I spent just learning how to manually install a mod I downloaded for Morrowind. I felt my water bags under my eyes swelling. I found another folder in the Data folder with the actual installation exe for!!! FOMM My eyes cleared the fog away. I decided to re-install the FOMM to see if it would fix the problem.

It did. It fixed the FOMM start up. I saw all the games mods. It had the switch to start Fallout 3 using the fose software. I clicked to start the game that way. Nothing happened.

I was sad again. I clicked around the disks folders. I clicked on Fallout Launcher on the disk. I expected nothing would change. The little window popped up and still showed me that it wanted to Install the game. I was at a loss. I did not turn on the Internet machine still. The Fallout 3 launch window got triggered to start from the FOMM. I liked that! When I tried to launch a pop up told me that the Fallout 3 could not find the correct folder to start the game.

I was totally shocked. Shocked stupid. I made sure the folder Fallout 3 was there. After a moment I started to feel like I was going to cry again. That sign popped up that told me that Fallout 3 was not able to work in Windows 10. Would I like to Learn More?

I had to be on the Internet to learn more. I clicked on "No!" again. I still wanted to get the game working. Soooo. I did the only thing I knew how. I tried everything again.

Step by step, one less tear to shed because I always was good at keeping my eyes dry when I did the chit style performance.

I checked off the list again.

I started the Fallout 3 Launcher again. I told the little Windows 10 no again. I clicked on Install. It started to install properly. I was overjoyed.

I told it I wanted to do the custom set up instead. When it got to the part where it asks where do you want to install the game I saw what was incorrect. I saw what was bugging me from the first load after I put the folder in the C:/Program Files(x86) manually. I forgot to make a folder with the name it needed to find the Fallout 3 folder when the game launched.

I stopped the installation from the launcher and added a new folder and named it correctly. I put the Fallout 3 stuff in the corrected folder so I could launch the game. I was ecstatic.

Tears of joy were flowing down my face.

I clicked on the FOMM starter. I clicked on the tab with Launch with fose. It worked.

The game window opened up the start screen and the music played and, and, and... it stopped.

I was flattened. In full 4k resolutions I was almost able to start the game. Still stupid after all these years. Yeah! That's life. Even when I got all the top grades after 3 months of study I was still finding stuff in school study programs that made feel stupid all over. I had to study the game set up again, just like before.

I went through the steps until I had, had about as much as I could stand and I couldn't stand it no more. I launched the setup function from the CD again. The little window opened. The Windows warning window with the LEARN MORE or NO popped up. I clicked no again!

I clicked on install.

Waiting

Waiting

Waiting

Waiting.

It finished installing without anything for me to complain about.

I was elated!

I looked in Progam Files(x86) to see if Fallout 3 was in the previously set up folder. What do ya know it was.

I thought. Great! I all my old files can be loaded in there now and it should work.

I clicked on play. The launcher message said was checking the settings for the best possible settings. I saw it worked. I looked at the screen resolution. It was 1920 x 1080. I wondered if that could be changed. I clicked on the little down arrow and saw it could.

It recognized all the possible settings. Even the best one for my present 21st Century monitor. It was time to play.

I clicked on play. The start up movie played. War Never Changes... The last part where the camera draws back from the vault 101 and the sounds of the door closing inside the cave where the guy says you will never leave; the picture froze.

I agonized for a whole second or two. No, just a couple of seconds, because I remembered the INI's the CD installed would be different for the Fallout and Fallout Prefs INI I tweaked back when.

I happily went to the saved folder with all the fancy tweaks and mods I had installed. Yeah! I was feeling warmer. I found the folder and opened the two folders from there. Instead of copy and paste I chose to examine the two originals with the two tweaked pages side by side.

I stared at the two comparing Fallout.ini with Fallout.ini from old and I was stunned. I forgot to save my own tweaked pages. I had saved the whole game in that folder, but did not make copies of the two I tweaked before I decided to run the Installation. So I had the copies of the Originals. I felt the tears a coming, coming round the duct, I could feel the wet warm water, flowing from all the way back.

I was freaking out!

I almost started to cuss. I had all but shut down mentally when an idea came to me. I had a file in the folder that I wrote to guide me through the steps of the best tweaks for the INI. All I had to do was follow my own instructions to redo the two INIs. Yay!

Yaaaay!

I dug it out, I tweaked the INI's.

The game started the movie part again. It got all the way to the part when I could see, New Game, etc., etc., and Quit at the bottom. The word Quit only showed the top half of the word. Darn, darn, DARN!

Oh! Yeah! DarN, the author of DarNified UI was clearly not working correctly. I had forgotten to save the changes in my instructions to set up the DarNified UI font settings. What a message!

I stared at the images on the machine. Grumbled a little. Then I decided to start a New Game.

I got all the way out of the Vault. I made it all the way to Megaton. I walked up to the robot and the gates froze.

If you guessed the picture locked up, you guessed correctly.

I felt like my brain was the inner tube of a tire and I was flattened.

I figured it must be the fonts settings. Yeah, so!

I finally had no choice but to turn on the Internet connection. I had to go and find DarN's instructions.

If you guessed that after getting the news that a newer version of DarNified UI was all I could find, on a VERY OLD webpage (www.nexusmods.com download page, not the modern www.nexusmods.com webpage the old one) that I found after doing a search, downloading the DarNified UI vers 2, installing it, and then finding another VERY OLD webpage (www.bethesda.com where DarN seems to reside even to this day) with the exact instructions for the Fonts I got and installed the game still didn't work, YOU WOULD BE CORRECT!

Dunt dunt DAAAA!

My hopes were slowly slipping out the back. I would just have to give it up and just put it all on my old Windows 7 laptop and never play it on the big screen again. Phew!

I was sitting here sadder then ever. I don't know why I decided to even try it. I guess the idea of having to go back to playing it on a 17 inch monitor might have had something to do with it.

Sad again, but comforted slightly by the fact that the Laptop would never need to be connected to the Internet and I could sit here playing Fallout 3 on my laptop to my little childlike hearts content.

I picked at the little switched and buttons with my mouse arrow. Shut it down and rebooted my PC Desktop just because in those days gone by it was often recommended to shut down after installing new stuff.

I couldn't resist trying it again. Didn't help.

I picked the buttons, opened the CD, and thought about uninstalling the whole thing, this time with the corrected INI's intact. I even clicked on the button that Windows 10 offered to LEARN MORE or no. The web browser opened up. The page was blank. Stayed that way too.

I don't why I just didn't quit and call it a night. I was mentally ragged from all the temper changes. I remembered how upset I used to get after paying good money for a game only to find out the game had glitches that had not been worked out before they sold the game.

I remembered.

I looked at that blank webpage. I stopped. I turned it off. I started the game up again. It got all the way to the same spot and quit again.

I was bummed and tired out.

I clicked the launcher again and when it came up, the Windows 10 offer came up again, I clicked on LEARN MORE again. I thought maybe there was a glitch the last time and the page would load this time.

Nope!

No, no, no, and no.

I saw something at the bottom of the webpage.

On the big screen monitor the letters were pretty darn hard to see in the little bottom row. It was only about a quarter of an in square.

Some of you may remember that Fallout 3 had a link called LIVE in the menu.

I saw the little download there, GFWL.

After all that work. After looking at the same webpage three times. After seeing that little tiny speck in the almost 4K image. After clicking on the little tiny download image.

The LIVE link let the game begin. No connection to the GFWL site anymore, but it still needed it to get it working.

I WIN!

AGAIN!

Something caused the message to appear saying that the message posted too quickly. I clicked on the Post function again. It did not appear to have posted. When I clicked on the Post button the second time that message clearly said the message didn't work because it was posted too quickly. Ha ha haaaa! I decide to refresh the page.

I clicked on the arrow circle. What do I see, Three posts. Two with the whole story I wrote above and the last one I took the story about out of before I realized the idea to refresh the Page. LOL

I WIN!

@Pagafyr,

Just an FYI, "Program Files" is the absolute worse place to have any game you wish to mod installed. The Windows User Account Control now has complete control of what you can do with the game files and will prevent you from making any changes to those files. It is known.

@M48A5

Okay! Let's say I want to mod Fallout 3.

Where do I put the Fallout 3 folder? How do I get it to run from there?

I turned off Windows User Account Control a long time ago. Is it working in the background without permission?

I have my Fallout 3 in the following: C:BethesdaSoftworks\Fallout3. Some people put it in Users\(name)\Documents\My Games. It is easy to do with the disc. Just choose custom install when the process begins. You might have to install the DLCs with the computer in safe mode. That was the only way I could get them to install.

As an aside, you should go through the tutorial, until about to the birthday party with no mods active. Then can be installed, just not active. Before the party, make a save and activate you mods. Then make a in the access tunnel before you get to the exit door but before the check if you want to change your looks. Exit the tunnel to the wasteland and make another save. This way you will not have to go through the tutorial and boring vault 101 scenes when you want to another playthrough.

It is not recommended that User Account Control be disabled. No, it is not working in the background, but I have read that it is almost impossible to shut it down in Windows 10.

After getting all the way to Megaton, seeing and talking to everyone, and Moira offering me a trade for that armored 101 vault suit I was really feeling like everything was going to work great. And then I went outside and saw Wolfgang. I clicked to talk and the game crashed.

I did a clean install without the DLCs installed this time; nor any mods

The fresh setup of the game gave me the usual problem after I saved outside the vault and click on Quit. It crashed...when I clicked on Quit.

It's behaving the same way it did when I first got it and installed it. CTD after CTD. It's a pain in the brain.

I have all the INI settings to tweak it for the 4GB problem. Three more adjustments to Display. And as for the nasty LIVE button...I will have to get out the ePages I saved with the settings to force quit the LIVE connection so it will not to interrupt.

I read the instructions for the FOMM. I found it has a button in Settings to deactivate Windows UAC.

Then it reported it to Microsoft.

I might actually give more of my spare time to it. Cold weather and all.

I enjoy Fallout 3.

Thanks for the Information.
