OBSE

I was told I needed OBSE in order to get one of the mods I'm using to work properly. But when I was sent to the download site, there was no explanation as to what it was. Searching through it's contents also proved to be fruitless. Please help.

OBSE is "oblivion script extender" you use it by unpacking it and installing all the components in you game data folder. Note: do not install it in the Data folder containing your esp's meshes, textures etc files!

thats all you need to do,works automatically

OBSE won't work if you put them at \data. It's not your 'typical' mod. You should put them where your game is installed, then use obse_loader.exe to run the game.

As already told, OBSE is an application which extend the script's capacities creating functions not existent in the original game. To do it and not change the original executable, OBSE need to start first and so (itself) start Oblivion.exe (this is the reason it shall be in the same folder the Oblivion.exe is), patch it in memory so to trap the instructions flow and execute itself it's own functions which would not be recognized by the game engine which would malfunction or crash other way.

So it's not just a mod and shall not be treated as such (and should not be blamed for common mod failures as so commonly occurs).

If no mod you use uses itself functions from it, OBSE shouldn't even be installed. Conversely if some mod you use need OBSE it is not an option anymore but an absolute necessity.

PS: Note when OBSE finds a 'normal', vanilla (original) function it simply pass the control to the game engine and "sit down" waiting for the next... It will catch and execute only it's own functions.

So, just to clarify; I should unpack the /obse_0017b.zip file into my /Bethesda Softworks file?
