I always play with companions. Any companion that I find first

If you follow the normal route.

That would be Ed-E (unless you don't have the skill to repair him) and Boone.

If you missed Boone somehow, you would get Veronica as there is very little chance you would miss her.

I've had both Boone and Veronica as companions but never tried Ed-E

It's kinda a toss up. Myself, I like playing as a loner for the most part. Nice to have some of the companion perks sometimes and the change up in the story line is sometimes humorous yet other times hokey. But the way that companions can totally alter the outcome is sometimes a royal pain. Stealth is out of the question, I usually tell'm "Wait Here" if I want to accomplish anything. But again some of dialogue is worth doing a run through with them in your presence. I don't like the fact that sometimes there is da.... if you do or don't outcome in the story line. No peaceful resolution no matter what you do. Or find out by assisting a companion (many hours later) you've botched something you wanted to attempt just to find out it's no longer possible. So far the only character I haven't played with extensively is Gannon. Far as I know I'm locked out of the Enclave bunker unless I practically drop an ungodly amount of game play. Humm, favorite companion ? Veronica and Boone maybe, I liked Christine a lot. Ed-E with enhanced sensors was cool but when you start relying on the perks and they are no longer available.....
