mechine
Idk Purge cell buffers isn't really proven yet, but I don't think it hurts anything. I used it just for good luck, maybe this time I can look into what it's doing more. Don't get much play time messing about with stuff. LOLZ ZOMG, eyah you know you're doing something right when you get reported. So yeah it's spam I even said it was, but that's the whole problem. I came up with a fix that kind of applies to most of the problems people post here. If it applied to the question then I spammed it in the bottom after the other stuff I said. Is it good or bad, am I making things worse, should I consider stopping this trolling madness? For what, a few "advanced members not liking it" or "not liking having to read" Bah, I do it for the noobs, the rest of you can go screwdriver yourselfs... On second thought I think I'll just quit... Seriously I'm only making things worse...
FarnsworthZUZU
XD i havent finished reading that post im gettin mad lag on fallout but i know why that is, thats kinda obvious. so far it seems to have crashes like so.. CTD, freeze then crashes to desktop, no error message, no problem, that was happnin before CLAM - (Crashes Like A Mother*TORUDEFORNEXUS*) where it freezes my entire computer and my cursor moves like a snail. a jumpy one at that. reboot sometimes needed GCERROR - grapics card fails hard, glitches visualy then crashes, forces me to reboot. shtuff starts disappearing :S and the master NOLOADCRASH! corrupts my save. crashes and is all around a stubborn b------d. im sure ive forgotten one. may edit post later. mechine
hmmmmmmm The CLAM can be from the system and also the system settings inside the fallout3.ini notepad options file. When you follow the tweek guide some of the settings in there give that same CLAMSo it kind of makes me think that either the notepad.ini was tweeked, or something in the form of a modis tweeking it. I've got the CLAM only from stuff like making fallout 3 use hyperthreading on audio (simulated duel core threads)but it does it for CPU's with physical duel cores as well, so it suggests that the CLAM is a major issue between the computer system software/hardware and fallout 3. CTD can be any number of things, a few which are just part of fallout 3 in any patched version (it's a freaking huge game on PC) GCERROR- I would update the grapics card driver, Direct X, Your BIOS, Your Chipset, (a known good clean install would be nice)Lots of work to get a fresh install of the system (windows, drivers, software, settings) but the reason Gamers swear by it is because a clean install of the system just runs smoother (plus you get better at making good choices, so better installs)Then again, grapics cards upgrades are part of this to, I don't remember which kind you have. All you really need is about512Mb of grapics RAM, fallout was designed for a 8000 series card to run on high-ultra settings. Pfft you don't have to wipe your hard drives if you didn't wana. I'd check, but I hear that we should go inside the C:/windows folder, and then open the prefetch folder and delete everything in there every so often. Idk I do it only if it was freaking huge... Un-install fallout 3, delete the stuff in the folder, you want a fresh clean install empty the trash bin (Recycle bin) defrag the hard drive, even if it says it doesn't need it Go to control panel, system, advanced, performance settings Set up your Vram (virtual ram, page file) I use the amount it windows suggests or I'll use a system managed size like the default setting, I think if you have 2Gb of ram you want a 4Gb page file or even a 5Gb one. Fallout 3 doesn't like OverClocking at all, so start with standard CPU clocks an Ram timming clocks with them set to auto. Probably shouldn't mess with the PCI-E clock speed either. You need at least Windows XP SP3 to run fallout 3, or run in compatibility mode for XP SP3Windows vista has a service that allows a admin to do this, run as XP SP3 or in XP SP3 compatibillty mode.I'm no vista user though. I got the last retail copy of windows XP home, baby, woo hooyeah, well it's faster in benchmarking so byte me... Okay so We cleaned up the system a bit or whatever. Install Fallout 3 to like C:/bethesda softworks (it's own folder) Heck I put fallout on it's own hard drive D:/bethesda softpoop (even better) Got it installed, yay! Patch to 1.7 Uh oh it doesn't work anymore, yeah you have to install GFWL probably (xlive something not found blah blah blah) yeah you can install fallout an not install GFWL at all (games for windows live) If you pick advanced install, you can also choose to install for all users or just this userwhich would later on maybe provide running two seperate installs of fallout 3 via seperate windows user accountswith fallout 3 advanced installed. Just a thought. Okay so you got it installed, and patched, don't add any mods or any changes. For one, I turn off fallout 3's AA an AF settings (performance) then force whatever AA an AF I want via the grapics cards control panel "override any application setting" this allows me to pick max AA an AF without any performance drop, while any setting over 4X in fallout's AA an AF setting yeilds major performance drops.Fallout doesn't like it when you first switch an start forcing AA an AF sometimes, which just relaunch fallout to fixit's rare an only happends if you go from fallout's 4X to Nvidias SLI 32XQ max setting or whatever. Go to the tweek guide http://www.tweakguides.com/Fallout3_1.html Note you don't have to do the whole thing, or everything in there. The point is to read it, then decide if it's going to be good for what you want. The changes to make fallout 3 do more hyperthreading across multiple cores of a CPU either simulated cores or nothelps in both cases, there are more tweeks for this for quad core users, but hey not all of us want or need a quad core. The rest of them helpped too. You can double the sound cache size, but leave the amount of sounds to cache aloneso it's like 4048 256 or something... Jack the decals up if you want, I use twice the amount, didn't have time to play with it. Pretty much I went by if they guide said it could cause anything bad, if it could cause something bador even a performance drop then I didn't do it. But remember you should test with default grapics settings, then test after to make sure it's not a problem.Tweeking the fallout.ini can actually cause problems, the question would be if it's worth it, I think it isI tweek the crap out of my fallout.ini Also this last time I took the max amount of a setting inside the fallout3launcher grapics settings most of them are like 2-14 or something, so there are 12 settings in total, divide that by 4 giving the 1/4 setting for whatever it was. So I first pick ultra settings, and then turn down the sliders to the 1/4 mark. I go in game later on then make sure that the grapics settings there are all equal, so I either pick the smallest or the largest one, an make them all match top to bottom. Maybe 3 shadows, medium shadows an filtering, but hey there's not much to gain in the stuff besdies the sliders, so you could max that if you wanted. Okay so now the whole point of all this Basicly what you are trying to do is get a base line and control group on the performance an quality of fallout 3 running it without any mods or DLC's, Just patched to 1.7 Run around crazy looking for problems, try to make the thing crash, do a bunch of crazy stuff Issues will come up which it's a good time to fix them. Stuff like static popping or stuttering, you wana work those bugs out. Get a smooth an high quality looking wasteland, but know that you'll be adding in system taxing mods later hence the 1/4 settings on draw distance, I played on max for a while, then 3/4 the way down, an now 1/4 the way down and I don't even notice as far as level of detail, but that's thanks to SLI 16XQ AA or SLI 32XQ AA being forced I don't even need texture packs at that kind of AA, Which texture packs would cause a performance drop from being high res. Also textures without mip maps created in them cause performance loss really bad. When I say smooth I mean for the most part you can run around as much as you want an not have stutters or crashes. Okay so you've tested the crap out of 1.7 an yeah it still crashes every so often, an has a few tiny issues, but it works as it was intended for the most part, and you enjoy playing it for a change. This is your control group. If there are problems later on it will be more easy to diagnosis them since you have a clean installand also a clean known good save game created at the start of the game. After you get the vanilla version of fallout working okay, then you add in the DLC's an test again. Then after that you start adding in the most complex mods first, to get them working first without all the other stuff which will make it harder. Look into the pinned topics for installing mods with DLC's I don't keep up with current install information. After this point, you should look into the OverRides, an at least the merge patch with FO3edit note that merge patch is different from the FO3 Java Plug In utility which will combine mods into one Merge patch just fixes some of the major CTD causing issues in a semi automated process then hey, master update it for good luck. After you install the mods an stuff you can try overclocking an stuff, so you'll know what's causing what. Pretty much rule things out as a cause, going from simple to complex is always a good idea... I did a bunch of other stuff too, it's tons of work... FarnsworthZUZU
Time to resurrect this old post  so ive been away because until i got new ram i gave up on FO3. but i did get new ram. as it turned out i had 2 512 sticks in my pc. i was under the impression my pc came with 1 gig, either i got cheated when they added some ram by taking out what was there an replacing it with new or it came with 512 and they added 512 more. regardless i managed to get a stick of ram pushing me up to 2 gig and it barley crashes, lag yes crashes occasionally, but atm all it does ctd when too much happens suddenly, like when i got engulfed in energy weapons fire from enclave soldiers, but that was fixed by turning EVE off in FOMM. Fallout really does need more ram than 1 gig, what gets me is that it said 1gb system req on the box not minimum 1 gig. still, what has most recently happened is that after deciding not to ... ::SPOILER ALERT:: ...save the wasteland muties from the FEV that "president Eden" was about to give me (decided to F*** em up instead >:]) i loaded an earlier save game only to be greeted with "fallout 3 fails at working so we are closing it to Flip you off *laughs at my expense*" and a corrupted save. so now i have to start all over again... Anyways, turning AA and AF off and lowering the graphics doesn't work. windowed mode however does, windowed games are a godsend. so anyways thanks to everyone who has posted. and be prepared for a TL;DR. im going to post a dxdiag report and my load order for FOMM. gsmanners
So, a Sempron is enough to run Fallout 3? I have an Athlon and it barely plays this game. Nothing like using 5-year-old CPU tech on a relatively resource-hungry game.
FarnsworthZUZU
Well yeah it runs the game sure but not without lag. its hard to fight in game, i have to attempt to snipe beforehand. but scince i have a crappy mouse thats hard. even with 100 small guns lol. but hey it runs better with more ram but i have to close every background program. even some BG processes. even sometimes explorer.exe scine that uses like 10-20,000k where as fallout can use up 800,000k + but the ram wasnt just for fo3 anyways. i needed it for photoshopping large files.
