Crashing on save

@AlienSlof: Yes, most of the cosmetic mods are female-oriented. It must be a guy thing. lol Me? I'd look like a reject from a half-way house living in those conditions.

I favor Ling's resource-oriented LingsFinerThings - Coiffure.esm (and accompanying BSA). Because of its structure, it is compatible with HairPack and I can change mods that reference HairPack to reference that master instead and remove dependency on a deprecated mod. So the legacy cosmetics are there as well as a ton of new content. Which works for me at character creation time in setting the "tone" of what that character's persona will be as I play the game. That is, it enhances but isn't my focal point. As with all things of "beauty," it is largely in the eye of the beholder and thus subject to personal preference.

As for the crashing still. Hmm. One (or more) of those mods is causing save bloat somehow or causing a fatally subtle in-game condition that blows the save file. I'm still investigating and learning that aspect of the game (engine) and mods' impact on it, so I can't give you any great insight or definitive answer.

@psyclops:

Yep, I agree. Conflicted scripts are the worst. That's why my entry into the GECK so far is focused on scripting. First, to fix via a combined script those mods whose scripts do clash and quite often break not only each others' functionality, but contribute to game-stopping crashes; secondly, I already know a few programming languages, so it is the easiest aspect of the game for me to learn (despite GECK's confusing, ungainly interface) in my first baby-steps at modding.

As far as conflict resolution in FO3Edit, unlike Visine, I don't try to get all the red out. Install enough realism and world-expanding mods and you're going to get them by the ton. The same goes for cosmetically altering NPCs (globally vis a vis Lings Pretty Things or Project Beauty, or individually in NPC-specific "improvement" mods). The key is to resolve them in FO3Edit so that the intent of each mod is met and do not prove fatal to the game itself. Sometimes the "resolution" turns the record orange-on-red. Okay, so I'm conflicted, but I am assured that it isn't fatal and that conflicted mods will fulfill their intent (noting the scripting conflict above) in a compromise "solution."

How about the uncorrupt-save trick? Save your game then blow yourself up and the use that save again. (Lol, no I'm serious.)

Any other solutions, install the latest version of .NET framework.

Try that CASM. I've heard that some people got in trouble when having more than just a few saves...that one just uses a few.

Try Gamebooster. Not for the performance but to check if anything else is interfering with your game. It allows you to shut down background-programs for a moment. (and turn them back on ;).)

Tum off GFWL like that one said on bethsoft. (apparently there's a mod of it). GFWL can magically let saves working, but as you have trouble with it it might be wise to shut it off.

Actually, your Fast Saver is what has saved it for me, so I'm going to stick with it! I think I have found the culprit - fast travel. When I fast travel, then go to save, it crashes. If my boy legs it around, then it seems to be mostly fine.

I set FFS to 1 minute intervals and it has allowed him to progress without a problem. Never again will he have to shoot those 3 mutants! YEY! :D

Well, it looks like I am not meant to play this game after all. Still crashes. This is my second try to play through - I put it down some months ago in frustration because of the same problems, the endless crashing. My second try at it hasn't worked either, so I think it's time to put it away and play something else. :P

I don't know if this helps but mine also crashesd on save and going to rivet city. I tried changing the number of processors from 1 to 2 every time i start the game. And also applied the install tweaker to use fake xlive, even thou I have all 5 DLC. The Game hasn't crashed in 3 hours. And also installed the Unoficial patch to broken steel.

I am also open to suggestions. peace.

PS> I have read in other places there is a fix called skulltura fix i will tried it, if it starts to crash again.

I am also running game booster. Game runs a little better. :)

Uhm ... damn it.

I had none of this save problems so far. Had some crashes because of mod conflicts, but this was easy to fix ;).

Are you running the official Patch 1.7? .NetFramework and everything else is up to date?

Don't know if it helps, just to shot into dark, but you could try to minimize usage of 3rd party progies. And try to avoid any fake or unofficial Patches.

The only thing I use is AI-Invalidated and FOSE.

I even don't use FOMM - just the default Launcher - since FOMM is conflicting my Internet Software (I use an UMTS Stick).

Though I'm testing a lot of Mods, I really use to play just a few.

(some Weapon, some Armor, some Evergreen, some Houses, some own ^^)

MMM and FOOK is known for various troubles, so I avoid 'em both.

This ever has been fine for me and until now I don't have any corrupted saves.

Hmmm .. I'm now having the same issues on saving. Just went to a new PC with vista (64) and 4 core processor. Played on an older machine (pentium4) with XP (same mod order) and never had any issues put stuttering and slowdowns, also upgraded to v1.7 of FO3. Time to try some of the options listed here (guess Dragon Age will have to wait a tad longer) and see if can get past the save crash. As stated 1st save always works after that no go ... wonder the drive is one of those energy saver ones that quiets when not used, might try rapid quick saves and see what happens then 5-10 min wait. Oh well something to eat up the day.

Edit ... well as long as I save every 2-3 minutes have no problems, can play for hours. Unfortunately, once fast travel then can no longer save without a CTD. Well I guess I am now a supporter of NO fast travel whether I wanted to be or not .... back to trying other things.

*Ahem*

I never thought i would experience this problem. I created a quick mod with a fat man called 'Megaton shooter' that shoots 'Mega Nukes' a.k.a the Megaton Nuke. Anyways, the point is, after the mod got installed i kept crashin after leaving a cell, or fast traveling and saving. I fixed it by disabling the mod and loading a save from before the mod was installed. By the way, the weapon worked except for the nuke not flying far enough. :D

It looks like I've joined the crash on save and passing though a door club :(

I had no problems with the game until I installed Lings Finest Things, then I found I was unable to save the game without crashing. I'm not saying Lings itself was the problem; something else I already had may have been conflicting with Lings. Anyway, I removed Lings and went back to a save from before I installed it. Everything seemed fine again, until I tried to pass through a door. Seems I now can't pass through a door without crashing, so I'm going to have to go through my setup carefully to see if i've overlooked something during the deletion process. Failing that, I might have to backup my saves and try a complete deletion and reinstall and careful one-by-one re-installation of just the mods I really want to keep. I might even try installing Lings first to try to identify the fatal conflict.

I tried rearranging the loading order of my mods but without success. I don't have a long list of mods though.

I have a quad-core processor (AMD Phenom T X4 9940 Black Edition) running Vista 64 and 8 gig RAM. I will be installing Windows 7 soon - I can't say I've found Vista 64 as stable as XP.

If I come up with anything, I'll report back. It may be a few days before I'll have the time to look into it though. In the meantime I'll be watching this forum to see if anyone else comes up with any answers or more ideas. Many thanks for the ideas and suggestions already posted.

P.S. I have the G.O.T.Y. Edition.
