I don't mean to sound rude, this is just my opinion; but, I really do not like the current smilies. Would it at all be possible to add some new ones? Even if just in addition to the current. Ideally (in my opinion) just an entire new set instead of the current, as they seem kinda... cheap, in my opinion. Sorry if that sounds rude, I'm just not sure how else to describe it.

You know it's interesting you say that. I've seen some sites where the screenies are barely viewable. I always thought we had a good selection here and they were pretty well made. If you know how to make them, why not create a few and then submit to the admin for approval. Can't hurt to try if you really feel a change is needed. :wink:

Why on earth would I make them? There's thousands of set available for free on the net.

Having worked on a couple of sites before, I'll tell you guys that adding smileys for a forum is not an easy task. It requires uploading to the server and then application in the admin area and altering a few codes to add them. It takes (at least for me) an average of 1 hour to add more smileys. I mean, it could be done over a weekend or something, but it's not quick and easy as it sounds.

Personally I don't use or even like smilies. I find the animated ones just annoying and distracting especially as jim_uk points out when they are over used, but that's just me. As a side note you can stomp the animated smilies dead by pressing the 'esc' key. I use that allot.

Please do not mistake my dislike of smilie use as a condemnation of their use by others. I know that the little pests are very popular on many forum boards and all too frequently over used although I haven't seen much of this on these forums.

 

Miss XunAmarox, you are not only within your rights, but I encourage to to put forth your proposal more specifically as to what you would like to see added or changed and I wish you luck with that. As for me I always have my little esc key handy.

I like the Invision style of emoticon best (I have a collection of well over 500... probably close to 1000). Very cute. Other styles just seem cheap / cheezy to me (but, to each their own).

 

The trick is in finding smilies that work with the background of the forum.

 

For example, it's almost impossible to see the music notes in this whistling one:

There are versions more appropriate for lighter backgrounds too:

I suppose you must be doing something wrong, or just aren't very experienced with forums (which you should not take as an insult) then. It takes only a few minutes at most to add new smilies. You simply need to upload them to your smilies folder then go to the admin panel where your smilies are controlled and add the unadded smilies in the smiley directory (I do not know about invision, but phpbb can do this for sure), you only have to assign the code to use a smiley, its name and location in the list. It's really very simple.

As for specific smilies themselves, I haven't been able to find the packs with the smiley sets that I actually like, but I know some forums that have them... If it's wanted, I could go save them off the forums and upload them in a zip or something, later when I have some time?
