The inherent problem here is the site will never 'define' the criteria for when people should give endorsements or not. It won't ever tell either that people need to endorse anything to begin with. That'd be besides the intention of endorsements. It is all up to you, each individual user him- or herself.

To me endorsements are purely a user thing. They have neither use nor meaning to an author.
The reasons for why people are giving them are thousands upon thousands of different ones, and exactly that many different meanings a single endorsement can have. Thus in sum they mean absolutely nothing anymore.

I always choose for myself, by my own standards and preferences, and I'll never let other random people's opinions dictate mine. If others prefer doing it that way, that's fine with me. It won't be my loss when they miss out on some quality mods due to it. I for one won't, as I won't let others dictate my choice.

You as a community can try to establish a rule set for giving endorsements, a community standard sort of maybe, and try to convince people to abide by them. The site, however, will remain neutral. It will not define for you what endorsements have to mean to you.

@DrakeTheDragon - If the author has disabled file ratings one can neither endorse nor abstain. Either option is denied due to the file ratings being disabled and the file remains in your list to be endorsed or abstained.

How about letting people decide?
I will endorse something when and ONLY when I feel like it, for one reason or another. End of story. I mean, there's not even anything to discuss here.
The moment something that even remotely reminds people of conditions or rules appears, they will stop endorsing mods completely just because (or would simply endorse everything just to get rid of any popups or whatever just to get rid of them as another extreme). Edited by Octopuss

Okay, Elianora. I understand your concern about this, but the fact of the matter is that there are many ungrateful people that don't take the time to appreciate someone's work. I know because I've been around Nexus longer than you think. Enough to know that I didn't not fail to recognize that the search function you are talking about was changed a year or so ago. Enough to know that there used to be a thumbs down button in the comment section that was removed because too many dumb people spammed the thumbs down. Enough to know that this site layout wasn't the original Nexus layout.

And sweety, no. If I was seeking attention I would shove a link to the page to everyone. The fact that you stumbled there was your choice. No one is forced to do what they don't want to. Admit it, your just upset I haven't scoped you out. I know... I know... I'm not giving the recognition that you deserve. I haven't checked your mods out just yet. At least I have to go back and check, but I did look at your list of mods and you seem to have a really good amount of endorsements. Congrats on that. No sarcasm, I'm being serious. :)

All I'm just saying is exceeding more expectations on endorsements isn't going to win you another cookie. Be thankful for what you get. Not everyone admires that most endorsed mod on Nexus. And not every mod out there gets 1k endorsements alone. Edited by wickedGRL

Yeah, its basically a thumbs up to the mod. Doing so not only gains the mod popularity, but also shows to potential downloaders that either the mod works as it says it does, people appreciate the authors' work or just believe that the mod has generally improved their game (hopefully all three!).
If you don;t think it quite meets those standards you can astain it. Astaing isn't a dislike button though, it's just telling the Nexus that I don't want to endorse this mod right now, and don't remind me about it again.'

As said above, the pop-up will disappear once all mods are either endorsed or abstained. It is also set to appear on a schedule, and you can set the time between it too, so in my opinion it will be more a helpful reminder rather than an annoyance.
