When installing mods and adding new texture and mesh files to your harddrive you should be able to 'merge' the folders. What OS (operating system) are you using Windows Vista will ask you if you want to merge the folder. You should click yes, it will not replace any folders or files unless there is a file of that name already there. Some mods may replace the default mesh/texture files, but just check the readme. If this does not apply to you just copy all of the files from within the mods texture/mesh folder and manually paste them inside the games texture/mesh folder. I hope this helps! Jenrai
It'll always ask you that mate. 9 times out of ten you're perfectly safe to overwrite/merge the folders. All it'll do if you have two files with the exact same name is overwrite the older one with the newest one. Don't install several mods at once though. That way lays danger. Install 1 or maybe two, and play test it for a while. I have one pretty much maxxed out charecter that I use for zipping around the place and making sure that the mod has actually added what its supposed to add before wandering off and playing for an hour or two to see if it broke anything else. Might sound like a lot of trouble, but believe you me it'll save you hours of hard work and troubleshooting later. Jenrai
bben46
It doesn't really overwrite, it actually appends the new stuff and leaves the old there.
LFact
As others said, 'overwriting' a directory does not always overwrite files inside. If your directory structure is like: \Oblivion\Data\Meshes\Armor\(CustomArmorA) And you try to install other mod, whose structure is:\Oblivion\Data\Meshes\Armor\(CustomArmorB) Archive extractor or File Explorer will ask 'Overwrite \Oblivion\Data\Meshes\Armor?'. When you click on 'Yes', the final structure will be like: \Oblivion\Data\Meshes\Armor\|---------------------------------\(CustomArmorA)|---------------------------------\(CustomArmorB) Sometimes, the file inside can be really overwritten. However, it may not effect the game much. If it happens, it usually means two or more mods share same modder's resource. Of course, it can cause trouble when you uninstall either one. If I remember correctly, depending on what OS or unpacking software you are using, the warning asks if it is okay to overwrite files in the destination folder because that folder name already exists. It hasn't written anything yet, so it can't yet detect individual file conflicts. Afterwards, it will ask for each individual file to overwrite when a same-name-file occurs unless you said Yes to All.This is probably why a lot of people use OBMM ( http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2097 ) because you can see potential conflicts beforehand and during installation.I still use it for initial mod loading, but do my final load ordering with BOSS and Wyre Bash (OBMM hasn't worked well for me when the mod list gets too long)
