So why exactly do people mod??

@LEGO

well i never had many manuals for those, as mentioned before i grew up in the GDR and only got the left overs from my western relatives (we had toys too but we mostly played in the woods, building shacks as our castles, wooden swords and such fun) so i had to invent my own "manuals" in my mind, when we fled ive played together with many of the "spoiled" (jking but kinda tue lol) western kids but they didnt use the manuals either, it just never came to our mind back then to read somin like that lol... we wanted to play..

however when i was with family this xmas i helped my cousin (8yrs) to build a truck and we had to do it by manual, he was just as vagrant mentioned rather schocked (in a good way) when i told him to just screw the manual and do it his way...

but i also agree with LH, i for example liked the horses they brought out, my uncle had some of these late 70ties sets where you still had to somehow build your own horse and they truly were crap to look at :D

however i realized the whole point of LEGO rather late, i always created to play at first until i realized that i actually didnt play at all, similiar to modding, i only found joy in the creation and just a lil satisfaction in actually playing with it

if youre parents are nice and dont mind you destroying some LEGOs its even better, i created a bunch of special effects for example by lighting some legos up, drilling holes in some of the dudes and putting spears in them and such lol (yaya... but no i didnt become a serial killer :D)

@uk47 and L33

true... quite amazing those 2 lol...

was similiar for me too actually... that sword contest thing i held two years ago (damn time flies :( i think that was also when uk started out) basicly opened me up for a lot of diverse modelling techniques for example which i never thought of before like spline modelling....

i guess having this community which kinda pushes you to do more and become better is one of the things that makes people work their ass off and try for better and better results

and we have a bunch of talented and knowledgable people here which is a very fine asset to have and many of them are really helpful and inspirational some of which became close to me, not necessarily as close as my real life friends but still, quite close for internet dudes :)

thx nexus!

@modding respect

i agree that an outsider who doent know what it takes to make a movie, a game or a piece of art can never really appreciate the work that goes into some creations, however what riddles me a bit is that modding gets so very little public attention in game magazines for example or in the console world

some of my friends are hardcore console fanatics and they simply dont get the whole concept of playing with mods "the game is not intended to be played that way" "the game is good as it is" and stuff like that, you cant explain it to them without them becoming defensive of their "you cant change poo" systems even tho you dont actually attack that...

bethesda is actually one of the very few companies as are epic and egosoft which see the potential and use it to make their games live much longer, however they are beginning to fear it too i assume since some mods are simply better than their DLCs which cost money...

Personnaly, i mod for two reasons:

the first, and main, is i like that. creating is pleasant, sometimes more pleasant than play.

it's very difficult, but when a mod is finish, i have a great satisfaction.

the second is more simple.

some mods i would like don't exist, so it's easier to make it myself than to wait somebody make them.

So why exactly do people mod??

Because I can!

Mainly, it's for much the same reason as Rebel: I make what I want in the game. When I modded Doom and Quake back in the early days, it was to create maps that were almost impossibly hard to complete because I enjoyed creating them, then testing my mettle playing them. When Morrowind came along, I started modding it because no one else was prepared to make male clothes and armour - as someone who plays mainly male characters, this boring situation meant that to get stuff for my boys, I'd just have to make it myself. Oblivion, much the same - not all of us play females. And because purple horses just don't cut it! :P

I also enjoy setting myself challenges within the modding; experimenting with different texturing and modelling ideas and techniques.

To quote the old beer commercials:

"why ask why?"

Just be glad that they do, for where would we be without them?

I have only one mod uploaded to the nexus, but it made a lot of people very happy, and that makes me very happy. I created it to solve a big problem I was was having, and it occurred to me that many others were likely having the same problem and needed a fix for it. It got nearly 100 downloads on it's very first day, so I guess I was right about that.

Mainly, though, I think that modding is in itself as much of a hobby as playing the games in the first place.

Mods are like those two cookies stuck together. You have the game and you have the mod, hand in hand. If someone does not like something they will change it for themselves and make it possible for others to use too. Others mod because after doing everything there is to do in a game, they add some more to the game or change the looks on a major scale, then they play again. Without mods people will get tired of a game I think.

So, Mod on my modder friends.

I have been using mods ever since morrowind and i look at all these extremely extensive & spectacular mods and i can't figure out why people put such insane amounts of time into the development of these different mods i mean some mods take years to finish and i can't figure out why people put all their time into making these mods for us freeloaders and even if their making them for themselves why go through the trouble of putting it out there for the general population. I hella apperciate all the modders hard work but i just dont understand why they do it..are they just really *ban* awesome people is all ?!?!

People do it as a hobby. no different then people who devote tons of time going to trade shows to collect baseball cards, coin collection etc.

Thank goodness we have these fine people willing to devote their time to make our game experience better.

Modding gets its own attention via grass roots. If you want to play or create mods for a game, you WILL find out where/how to do it regardless if a game magazine mentions it. However, when I subscribbed to PC Gamer, they always had a page or two in the back dedicated to "extended play." One of these articles actually covered mods for Oblivion: Click Here

Bethesda also does a great job promoting the modding community by providing an "official forum" and blogs talking about mods and interviewing modders.

EDIT: @Pushkatu - I realize there is more Bethesda "could" do but I am grateful for just what they "have" done. I'm even more grateful for what the community of programmers have done! It is easy to get upset about what you don't have because you are ALWAYS not going to have everything. I have found that the best policy is to take the lemon you have (Oblivion + CS is far from being a lemon) and make lemonade...so to speak.

I don't want to sound rude or anything, but I don't think Bethesda does such a great job promoting the modding community considering it's you guys who made this game what it is today. They did however prodived the raw tools and platform for modders out there to work with, but most of the amazing mods where done using other resources that you guys know very well. A forum is a normal thing to have, most good games have one so that people that like the game can meet there and talk. As for the blogs talking about mods, that is the least they could do in my opinion and let's be honest how often do we get to see such blogs? Of course they are very happy having such a community, as it helps them to, considering many people buy or still play this game only becouse of it's mods. What I would like them to do is get more involved with the mod projects, release new tools or improve the CS to help modders out, but we don't get to see them doing this. Instead after the games are released, after a year or so, they stop releasing patches even if they know buggs are present in the current version of the game. So most of the time it's up for modders to try and fix the buggs. I do admire Bethesda for making the TES series, but that's where my admiring stops. :)

Most modders are artists and many of them don't even know that. At least this is what I like to think. Mods they share are some of their best paintings and Nexus is the best galary in my opinion.

Anyway, Bethesda is playing our game now, not vice versa! :)

Cheers,

Pushkatu! :thumbsup:
