Kendo 2
@TrandoshanI need a qualifier for this before I can respond. How many REMs (rads emitted per minute) are typical air travelers subjected to? I need a base-line and I can't find any readily available internet reference. For me, once some hard data on the health risks are stated (not by the promo-mouth in the news piece), I will gladly clash blades with you or be your brother in arms. Same here, I can't find any other data on how it works other than it exists. I was hoping someone else had a clue. As long as the government doesn't get the idea to have one of these set up in front of my house I have no qualms. Of course, I'm never riding a jet again in my life. In the... *sigh*... Debate of it's morality. Privacy... Fat People... Ashamed of weight. Bah, I started a dull topic didn't I.... It's ok, I will find something easier to debate on. Maxwell the Fool
I think it's a necessary evil..... Being a man though, my opinion isn't as important as that of women, because their figure is revealed to the level of the images being pornographic..... Kendo 2
I already see a flaw in the technology. How safe is 'safe'? HOW MANY REMS are they pumping into people? Is it equal to a household mircowave oven that can stall pace-makers? It is equal to a dental X-ray? And WHAT kind of radiation are people being exposed to when they fly? The air quality in aircraft already sucks, that's a fact. So is it equal to radon gas? What the hell are flyers being exposed to now? WHAT IS THE BASE-LINE EXPOSURE?!? GAHHHH!!!!! Aurielius
Measure then countermeasure, this level of intrusion will be looked back in a decade or two as the good old days when it was easier to fly. I would find this laughable if it was not such a serious subject. We are worried about aircraft while we have a totally porous northern border of which you can simply walk right in. Go figure....If you are worried about flying then this might amuse you. Never let it be said that ground crews lack a sense of humor. Here are someactual maintenance complaints submitted by UPS ' pilots (marked with a P)and the solutions recorded (marked with an S) by maintenance engineers. By the way, UPS is the only major airline that has never, ever, had anaccident. P: Left inside main tire almost needs replacement.S: Almost replaced left inside main tire.*P: Test flight OK, except auto-land very rough.S: Auto-land not installed on this aircraft.*P: Something loose in cockpitS: Something tightened in cockpit*P: Dead bugs on windshield.S: Live bugs on back-order.*P: Autopilot in altitude-hold mode produces a 200 feet per minute descent.S: Cannot reproduce problem on ground..*P: Evidence of leak on right main landing gear.S: Evidence removed.*P: DME volume unbelievably loud.S: DME volume set to more believable level.*P: Friction locks cause throttle levers to stick.S: That's what friction locks are for.*P: IFF inoperative in OFF mode..S: IFF always inoperative in OFF mode.*P: Suspected crack in windshield.S: Suspect you're right.*P: Number 3 engine missing..S: Engine found on right wing after brief search*P: Aircraft handles funny. Kendo 2
*looks at the CNN clip again*Hype, maybe? Show the dumb Americans "Hey, look what we're doing to make flying safer."?...Anyway... Putting the dubious 'safety' aside, as a flyer I don't think this is an invasion of privacy as long as it is applied to everyone equally across the board. The last time I flew I was wanded and had my carry-on ramsacked THREE TIMES. Believe me, I don't fit the FFA profile for a terrorist. Neither did the African-American couple I chatted with before boarding. They were wanded and so was their seven year old daughter and her teddy bear. A seven year old girl was wanded but individuals who DID fit the FFA profile were waved through with smiles by security. That's just messed up. Subject all flyers to this 'Secure 1000'. It's less invasive than being wanded. @Aurielius XD
Vagrant0
All of these security measures are both too invasive, too expensive, and outright ineffective. Where's the statistic to show the number of people who were rightfully searched and detained? Compared to more traditional methods, such as you know, investigating unusual activity, looking into persons of interest, ect, everything they've done is pure failure time and time again. The only thing these security measures accomplish is making travel a real pain in the ass for everyone and only serves to make people become even more frightened when something actually happens. It won't be long before everyone who flies, even short distance domestic, has to undergo a full body cavity search and have their stomach pumped... Just to be safe... And that will only work until you have someone crazy enough to put explosives inside their bodies... Then it's time for people to get a full MRI scan in addition to the body cavity search. At which point, you're exposing millions of people to obscene amounts of radiation and evasive tests which do much more damage to both the airlines and the general population than ANY terrorist act.
