my windows xp is freezing at the most random times

and it is soooo annoying, i have to reset it everytime

it was doing it ages ago and then stopped all of a sudden

it restarted when i cleaned my computer and defragged

ive checked around and this problem has happened to other people and i havent found a solution,

keyboard and mouse lock up and the sound stuffs up, sounds like a broken record

got any ideas of how i can fix it or what the problem is?

cause im just about ready to hit it with a club (lol)

but seriously it is very annoying!!!!!!!!

@ bben46

nah didnt work

disabled the programs and then when i was in mid reply to this topic, it froze again

im thinking its a problem with the defragmentation or something because the problem went away and then i defraged and it has begun freezing more frequently than ever

If you were replying to this post, and Oblivion was not running when it froze then it is not a game problem but a problem with your system.

Oblivion does not play well with other programs active in XP. It seems to do somewhat better for me in Win7.

If you were replying and Oblivion froze while replying ... Then your browser was open.

Back when I was using XP, I had a similar problem. It turned out to be a HP printer program that insisted it had to run to check for updates every day. When I checked for open programs, it was not open. However, the scheduler WAS running in the background, and it called the HP program. If The HP program was unable to 'call home' it would wait 10 minutes and try again. I had disabled my internet connection so I thought nothing would try to use it. I was wrong. So every ten minutes my game froze until I finally killed the scheduler program. However, periodically when I ran the HP printer, it would see the scheduler was off and would turn it back on as a favor so I wouldn't miss one of their once yearly updates. That 'feature' was not in the latest version of HP printer drivers I downloaded, although HP still has some of the worst software I have seen for their printers.

are you hearing any weird noises from your HDD? XP started acting wacky on me because my HDD was about to go

Really sounds like something may have gotten corrupted during your defrag and cleaning....happens sometimes. MIght have to reformat

But, it could also be a virus or overheating, bad RAM, etc...lol just like a stinking car.

The easiest and simplest way to fix problems like that is usually just to reinstall Windows. If its a software problem, that should fix it - and if it doesnt, chances are its a problem with your hard disk or some other piece of hardware, as Illiad suggested. Trying to find the cause otherwise could prove to be time-consuming and difficult.

@ illiad86

no, not hearing any strange hd noises

and im sure its not a virus, my ram is fine

it may be a problem with overheating, but i dont see how it can automatically freeze as soon as i switch it on and open up microsoft word.

@ The_Terminator

tried to reformat windows didnt work,

ive heard some people have reformatted 5 or 6 times and it doesnt make a difference, still the same problem

i switched hard drives when i upgraded from my old computer which did the exact same thing,

so i dont think theres a problem there

I had a serious problem somewhat like your's, it turned out being the nforce chipset itself, a flaw that seems to plague all nforce versions, something nvidia was never able to solve. In my particular case only changing the mother board for one with AMD chipset really solved that very annoying problem.

Yet, while trying to troubleshoot was found the early phenoms had a serious fault and most bios presents option to workaround it. That issue is related with DEP (sorry I do not remember the details because it was not directly my case) and seems to affect Phenoms up to B3 revision and was corrected at the C3. Anyway it may be worthy checking. A little program named CPU-Z is can be used to this, it gives you deep and accurate informations on important system resources, like the CPU itself, RAM and some about the mobo,

Windows 'patches' the phenom always, doesn't matter if it is a flawed version or not and is not friendly about disabling the feature that compromises performance and sometimes is itself instability source.

Sorry I can't be more specific here and can only give directions.
