Why is this happening? I'm not complaining, of course, but I'm curious.

May be several reasons, one being the shared connection (groups) where the other users got out on vacation. Or your ISP just forgot to set the limit...

 

Just pretend you did not notice it... :whistling:

 

PS: shamefully I do have the opposite problem :verymad: and just is a contractual feature they compromises to keep a minimal speed instead the nominal.... so, sometimes i get that nominal speed but can't rely on it.

Like Nosisab has stated, it could be that half the neighborhood is on vacation. Most people's internet connection are shared connections, meaning that your internet connection is being shared with potentially thousands of other users. Here in Arkansas, most of everyone's connection runs through a fiber optic line that runs to a datacenter in Little Rock. At the university that I go to, we have our own dedicated fiber optic line for exclusively the campus. During the semester, we get decent broadband speeds. During the summer, when no one is on campus, the IT department has that dedicated fiber optic line to themselves. Our current record is 6.7 MB/s download speed on a 300 MB download.

 

I hope this explains. It's all about how many people are on the line and how much traffic there is. I would enjoy the extra speed while you have it.

I am currently living in Iowa, and have to use a small company for my internet. During the weekends the internet connection is little more than 870kbs, but when surfing the internet at 3 in the morning on a weekday, I get well over 20MBs. That kinda sucks for multiplayer gaming though, since I have no bandwidth during the times everyone else is on.
