Detect Life?

I don't get detect life in Oblivion.

In morrowind I could see little dots on a mini-map with detect life, or animals, or whatever.

In oblivion I don't see any display that makes detect life work... and I'm not seeing through walls or in infrared or anything? I expected dots on the compass, but I don't see any.

How does detect life work?

Most likely there is a mini-map... but if there is, I don't know how to make it pop up.

detect life works by makeing most if not all critters/npcs have a white glowy effect around them out to a certain range based on the spell...you see them with your characters eyes just like normal, except the glowy is visible in all conditions and through walls etc...

Simply paints a pink-purple haze over any creature/person within range. The novice-level Detect Life spell, however, is pretty short-ranged and is most useful in caverns where you'll be able to detect close-by enemies who are masked by a tunnel wall or whatnot.

Detect Life isn't based on a chance of whether or not you'll detect a target— the spell will paint a target every time something happens to be in range, even at Novice level. The better the spell, the better the range of detection and duration of the effect.

Also, it detects anything that moves. So even though it's a detect LIFE spell, it will detect the undead. Which I thought was kinda weird, but it's just how they made it.

I think the behavior of detect life (or the equivalent spell) has detected anything animate at least since Daggerfall. The Morrowind Detect Animal spell has a similar or more misleading name than Detect Life. After using it for a while now, I like the Oblivion implementation of the spell where the beings detected are visible in the main view better than the Morrowind version where you had to switch back and forth between the main view and map (or the mini-map) while using the spell. I also seem to have had more problems with the Morrowind version being unreliable in that there seem to have been dead zones/areas where nothing would register even though there were animate beings present.

The Undead have life, it's just that it's been instilled into dead substance. After all, you 'kill' the Undead, who are (of course) not 'dead'. They're 'un'-dead. Break out that warhammer and make sure you 're'-dead them.

Detect Life officially scans for Unlife as well...

Kinda like Detect Animation or Detect Impetus...

Detect Anima?

Well, at any rate. I saw everyone glowing for a while and I quickly made the connection.

It wasn't at all what I expected - but I like that.

I'm glad its different then morrowind. It seems more magical and cool this way...

I don't see it being very useful, but its more interesting so far.

Thanks

It'll be helpful in detecting chameleons and invisible enemies, as well as wil'o-wisps (willies don't actually 'teleport' around as some people think— they just go invisible when they move).

I don't think that you can detect invisible creatures. However it is extremely useful for rooting out those undead/dremora bas****rds before they attack you from behind. Especially useful when escorting somebody and don't wanna get caught by surprise.

Detect life is very usefull while moving around a dungeon, while on a stealth mission, breaking into a castle etc.... A v nice and good way too detect guards n NPC´s before they spot you. 8)
