Help Installing Mods on Windows 7, 64 bit.

After my last computer had a mobo failure, I decided to start fresh with oblivion mods.

I have a nice desktop that can run oblivion on max settings, however it doesn't mean that much to me if I can't have mods. I don't know why, but I just can't get them to work on windows 7. I place them into the place I would normally put them on my Vista Pc [The only difference being that it's now in Program files(x86) ], and the one I'm trying to install shows up in data files, but when I go to play it doesn't actually work. At all.

I can't think of what's going on. I had tons of mods on Vista 32 bit, but I can't get them to work on W7.

I , as well as many others have Win7 x64. Oblivion and the mods run fine. Administrator works diferently on Win7. Even if you are logged on as an administrator, you still have to give each program you install in the program files folder an extra administrator approval as part of the new and enhanced UAC, Right click and select 'run as administrator' OR, to avoid all the hassle:

On Win7, the default location is the wrong place. You need to reinstall and put it in C:\Games\Oblivion You will no longer have any UAC hassle at all. Then put any other games you may wish to mod there also. You can also add the c:\games folder to your games library (or not if you don't use the new libraries)

Here is a link to my complete uninstall/reinstall procedure located in the articles section of the Nexus

The symptoms described points for the game installed under the C:\Program Files folder. If it's so and you are in the very beginning, uninstall it and install somewhere else. Example: C:\Games.

Avoid installing games under that default path. Vista and 7 treats it with 'increased security' policies that prevents 3rd part applications to access files there (like the own CS, OBSE and whatever else that try it). Actually it's possible to workaround the issues but they involves disabling UAC, giving special access, running as administrator... all these with a common feature, they defeat the very purpose of 'increased security'.

It's that simple, just avoid installing games in MicroSoft created folders, what includes that C:\Program Files (and it's x86 counterpart); anything under the /Users, what includes (My) Documents; and of course the Desktop...

Any User's created folder under disk root will do the trick.

Is that right?
Nope.

Uninstall Oblivion.

Then rename this folder to avoid confusion:

C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\ ---> C:\Program Files\OLD BETH FOLDER\

Now start the Oblivion install.

When you get the opportunity to pick the destination location, change it to something like C:\Games\Oblivion (anything other than C:\Program Files\ )

Once Oblivion is installed, ALL the files should be in that folder and there should NOT be a C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion folder.

Example:

C:\Games\Oblivion\Oblivion.exe

C:\Games\Oblivion\Data\Oblivion.esm

There is a very simple solution to this. xD

Just make a copy of the original Oblivion folder in Program Files/Bethesda Softworks/Oblivion and paste it to C:/Games/Bethsoft/Oblivion (or something).

Worked for me, and I am using the original Program Files oblivion as a backup in case my copied and HEAVILY modded oblivion ever goes crashmatic sometime.

Re-installing the game is unnecessary, copy & paste = Much quicker! ;)

Then again in some cases you need clean installs in which installations come in handy ._.

I'm installing it to a folder I made on the C drive, but it still makes a Bethesda Softworks file under Program Files(x86). It's frustrating.

So what exactly are the files that the installer is putting in C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\ ?
