VaanicOne
IRC Tutorial. Hello everybody, let me begin by telling you all the purpose(s) of this post: ~ To inform people about how to access the Gamingsource chat channel. ~ To give people the basic instructions on using a typical chat program (in this case IceChat) ~ To provide a common thread where people can query about issues and problems they are having. ~ To allow people to ADD to the tutorial in the form of their own posts. Part 1: Accessing the chatroom. The first method is this: Look at the top of the forum page, to the right of "Posting don'ts" is a link called "Live chat". Click this link to enter the Java version of the chatroom. All you have to do then is wait while it loads up - after it has finished doing so, type /nick <enter preferred nick here> to give yourself a unique name. If you already have a different chat program, or you often use the java system provided on the chatspike.net website, then simply type /join #gamingsource to get to us. IMPORTANT NOTE: We are on the CHATSPIKE SERVER - you will not be able to join us if you are on say, quakenet. Chatspike server names are such: kenny.chatspike.net, or stitch.chatspike.net, for example. Part 1: Getting started in a chat program. This very short tutorial will hopefully inform people about getting started with a chat program, as they can be VERY confusing - I know my first experiences were. The program used for this tutorial will be IceChat. Here is a link to their website. I'm sorry, but I can't do a tutorial for every program out there. Starting up Icechat is a simple affair, simply download (for FREE) and follow the installation instructions. Soon enough you will come to a window that looks like this: CLICK HERE I've numbered it, and shall explain the meaning of it all. 1. THis is the most important one, and as you can see, it is "essential". Meaning you need it. I have already typed in the required server name. 2. Server port. Type in 6667 here. 3. Server password. Forget this, because Chatspike does not have one. 4. Quit message, type whatever you like in here (so long as it isn't rude!), the message will display whenever you quit. 5. Your Ident and Full name, often the same thing. It's usually best just to type your desired username here. 6. Username, this is absolutely required! Type whatever you wish so long as it is not offensive. Try to keep it short, too. 7. Alternative nickname, usually this can just be a slight variation on your original username, and while not required, it's pretty useful to have a backup. 8. Away nick, for use with the /away scripts. 9. Nickserv password, if you're not registered, then don't bother with this. Registration, however, prevents your nick from being copied. 10. Startup options, click on your discretion. :) After doing this, press the "save" button. and type in the typing bar /join #gamingsource. Of course, you don't want to do that EVERY time you come on so go back onto the server options window, and follow these instructions: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y206/0loweo/IRC2x.jpg right, so those are the VERY basics of Icechat. Feel free to explore the rest of the program as you wish. As I said before, feel free to add your own advice to this thread, ask questions, etc.

loveme4whoiam
I've been trying to get into the IRC, but I'm having trouble with my IRC client, HydraIRC. When I attempt to Add Server, the #chatspike network doesn't appear on its list. Does that mean I have to manually enter all the details about it and hope it finds it, or is there an easier way? Or, should I stop being a pain and just download IceChat as well?
ThetaOrionis01
Just add the details manually - mIRC didn't have the chatspike network listed either, as I recall. Alternatively, connect to any network, then type /server irc.chatspike.net which should disconnect you from your current network and reconnect you to a chatspike server. If you want to remain connected to your current network and open a new connection to chatspike in a new window type /server -m irc.chatspike.net instead.
