I need more space!

Recommended Posts

This thread made me double check my folder sizes. I have 26gb in my main Oblivion folder as well as 17 in my "backup" folder which is where I extract all my downloads, then copy them where they need to go.

I have a 500gb hard drive so that isn't much of a problem, but it was a lil eye opening. I guess I didn't realize the amount of mods I was picking up.

On topic, have you thought about an external hard drive? You can get them fairly cheap, bben pointed out a great site tigerdirect. They will give you the most bang for your buck.

A couple of quick programs to help you free up some space.

Ccleaner - excellent program, cleans up temp files, cache junk, all kinds of stuff.

Auslogics defrag - One of the fastest and most in depth defrag programs I have come across.

So, to be sure of everything.. If I don't care at all about preserving my data, and I have a SATA port and power plug, I can get a connector cable and a hard drive and just plug it in? No compatibility nightmares like I had with the PCI/PCI-E thing?

Note Oblivion's not taking up that much space. The program list shows it like that, because Oblivion, the construction set, and OMM are in the same directory, and that directory is 16GB.

There'll be no compatibility issues to worry about. The connectors are keyed and cannot be plugged in wrong, and if there's a speed mismatch between hard drive and motherboard, then all you do is lose performance, the connectors are not different. (much like plugging a USB 1 device into a USB 2 hub)

It's pretty much plug and play when adding a drive.

Not only no compatibility issues, but no reason to get rid of the old drive - keep it installed as a place to put backups.

You will have to go into the BIOS settings (usually just press del or esc or something - it should tell you during boot). Then find the BOOT order setting - it's usually easy to find and tell it which HD to boot first. Normal boot order will lokks like #1 USB (or external) #2 CD drive #3 first hard drive to boot. #4 any other boot device - #4 will only boot if there are no devices bootable in 1,2 & 3.

If you are going to reinstall everything and use the new drive as your C: drive, then leave the old one unplugged and do the new install to the new disk. It should automatically be identified as C: Then plug in the original drive and it will automatically be assigned the next available drive letter - if you have a CD as D: (normal) than the old drive will be assigned to E:

Then, if you want, you can go into the control panel and change the drive letters to what you want. Usually our primary hard drive should be C: but the secondary can be any letter you want - including B: . A: is usually reserved for floppy disk, but newer boards with no floppy support may allow you to use it for some other drive.

I found this on eBay.

I'm just wondering why it's so cheap. Is it a cell phone part drive or something?

It's a normal 1.5TB Harddrive. I think it is that cheap because the auction is running for another day, normal ebay behaviour. Have a look at it and place your bet before it ends.

hehe that'll go up to normal price by the time it ends...ahh Ebay sniping  Not as easy as it used to be. You're better off just getting it off newegg or tigerdirect...normally free shipping, no sales tax, and no worry dealing with an Ebay user....they may have good ratings and all but they have their hiccups where they "forget" to send it to you... Just loved waiting 2 weeks for a CD from 3 states away because it got "lost" in the mail...ya right.

You are right, i think. I often use ebay to buy some stuff for my car, even in the states (got parts their for a bunch of the price i have to pay in Germany..., yeah it's a spare one here... ).

But be aware, at the end of an auction the price will get high, so do yourself a favour and set a limit to yourself. It wont make any sense to pay more on ebay than on the shop next door
