  1. 1. Do You Use Universal Silent Voice or Not?

  2. 2. How do you get delay and lip movement for mods that do not include those things?

    • I run TES4Gecko on each mod that I need to.
    • I use Universal Silent Voice.
    • I don't read what they say and just follow quest markers.

    • I won't play mods like that.

  3. 3. Should a non-voice acted mod that is available for download include silent voice files?

    • Yes, as part of the complete file
    • Yes, as separate file you can download if you want to.
    • No

Someone made a comment that got me thinking. They were ticked off that a mod I uploaded included silent voice files. I guess they don't like the extra download time or having the files take up space on their computer or something like that.

I figured I had done what was good and right and would make the mod easier to use and better to play. But what is good and right depends on what people really want. What do people want?

I think more people would complain if you did not include the files, especially non english speakers who need the extra time to translate unfamiliar words. There is nothing more annoying than missing an important clue given in dialogue, especially in a mod that has no quest markers at all.

@ Fonger,

I do not understand what you are getting at. If I make and upload a mod I can make silent voice files and upload them, or choose not to make silent voice files and upload them. I am not stealing anybody's work. I do not see why I would be a pirate. It is my mod. I made it. I have never seen anything that says that you are not allowed to upload product edited with TES4Gecko. As far as I know, TES4Gecko is a utility and you are supposed to use it and upload the resulting mods. The authors of TES4Gecko do not forbid you to use their program.

EDIT: Typo correction.

Like yourself David I make mods and use mods that include non-voice acted dialogue ( still learning though and my ability to write dialogue is naff ), and universal silent voice is essential for me as I have no idea how to implement voice files, yeldarb is correct about it being annoying if you miss important stuff because the dialogue moves too quickly, and the 8 second delay in universal silent voice is a godsend.

I would say you dont really need to include your own silent voice files as Elys voice extender works just fine and it must be much easier to just provide a link to that mod.

There is also nothing wrong with providing your own silent voice files as well, especially if you find a 10 second or 12 second delay suits your mod better.

I think you should have them up separately for download, so that the people who don't need the files and don't want to waste the bandwidth don't need to download them. I suppose it really depends on how large the files are together, though.

According to the poll so far, more people use Universal Silent Voice than do not. But it may be that the sample size is small and skewed. The people who read and post on an Oblivion forum are the experts who are really involved in the game. I wonder if there is a lower percentage of Universal Silent Voice usage by casual gamers and people new to Oblivion?

I would think it likely - after all you must install OBSE and get it working before you can consider Universal Silent Voice, and OBSE can be intimidating to a new user who has just started adding mods to his game. Also, there are those who cannot install OBSE at all (direct2drive). They can never use Universal Silent Voice.

People just need to learn to speed-read. That's what I do. Although, as a courtesy for those who can't read quickly, I usually keep the number of words per 'page' in the dialogue to a minimum.
