ThetaOrionis01
I don't have any problems with ur usage of u and ur. :D If a poster wants to use u and ur and 2 etc I consider that simply a poster's idiosyncratic style of writing. If someone wants to do all their posts in iambic pentameter, that's also fine by me. The bottom line is - can I understand it? Substituting the odd number or txt shorthand doesn't really make much difference to a post's readability - it's comparable to people using archaic terms you have to look up in the dictionary. Equally, if a poster's native language isn't English and he/she uses some unusual syntax it's not too hard usually to make out what he/she is saying - and if it is, I can always ask for clarification. What I do object to is the 'stream of consciousness' style of posting where you have to wade through an entire paragraph without a comma full stop or any other indication where one sentence ends and the next begins the poster's point gets lost somewhere in the middle when i just can't be bothered trying to work out what he/she is trying to say and what did he or she mean by that anyway can anyone tell me where i find fargoth and isn't it annoying having to read something like that so what do you think is the best house to join i think telvanni are cool and why aren't you replying can't you read well i've had enough of this and so i'm going to stop this was just an example of how not to post if you want to have your questions answered cos if i have to put more effort into deciphering the post than into writing the answer i probably won't bother.
Switch
LOL good point Theta. But I tend to speak normal on other forums so I may as well start on here :P but those long rambling sentences are the worst (besides 1337 which is even worse). Especially when they change subject mid-sentence!
Mojlnir
I realize that this thread is moving along the lonely path towards obscurity but I wanted to reply to Albareth. I apologize for the amount of time that has passed since I last posted reguarly, school has monopolized my time. I am full well aware that on the Internet not everyone is a native speaker of English. I certainly meant no offense, having spent eight years learning German myself. I am still ashamed of my grammatical skill in German and I have nothing but respect for anyone who learns a foreign language and is not afraid to use it in an environment where they may draw criticism. My problem is not even with grammar on these (and other) forums. I understand that oftentimes people are in a rush to get something posted, or they simply don't want to take the time to type all the words out. That is completely fine with me, and like I said, I wouldn't dare correct anyone. My problem lies with grammatical laziness in the real world, and particularly the academic world. What I see on a daily basis reflects our general lack of commitment (in the U.S.) to the education of young people. More to the point, grammatical laziness is more often not due to a learning disability of some kind but rather the simple fact that people are not taught how to write well anymore. College students, freshmen included, should be able to turn in a well written paper. Darn it.I use shorthand to take notes in class and 1 c4n 3v3n h4nd13 1337.3nd oph 53rm0n. Malchik
As I writer of plays I have to use a whole variety of ways of speaking to distinguish between characters, each has to have their own stye and 'language'. This rubs off on how I speak and write in the real world. So I might post in a whole variety of ways. Sometimes I make typos and don't notice, sometimes I reply in what is meant to be a light-hearted (read light-headed) way. As long as anyone makes themselves clear it shouldn't matter. An international internet forum for an RPG can't be the right place to teach grammar. I agree it's very sad that even most teachers have little idea of spelling, syntax etc. Send 'em back to school that's what I say! I'm directing Shakespeare's Measure for Measure at the moment (we refer to it in emails and on the fliers as M4M) and recently (unintentionally) sent out a costume list saying the Duke when dressed as a friar should have sandals or bear feet! That's the trouble with spell check! I am also completely, certifiably and dangerously insane, off my trolley, out of my tree, loony tunes etc.etc. So you might get anything!!! I suppose all this waffle is to say. Write in any way you want. If no one understands it, you won't get any answers. And hey'm u reel coooool dudes i'th'outer realms, dontyer forget my strap line:- I'm infallible - except when I make mistakes. TTFN
wesaynothin
1f s0m0n3 st4rts sp34k1ng 1n 1337, hurt them. (eep! not me!!) leet is just something to make it whatever they are saying hard to read. It gets horribly annoying.when people start using the 'color' thing up their in their psts, it gets annoying. So dont! And I understand spelling things wrong. I have made quite a few mistakes already. The one thing to remember is, go back and check! Make sure your sentences make sense. Make sure you spelled something right. The occaisional messup is fine, we are online after all, but dont write as if you jsut came out of your first day of Kindergarten. There uis a large difference between: I saw a cat. It wa cute. I wanted to hold it. and I sa a cat It wa ute  i waned hole it,.----------------------------------------------- Online language has, frankly, evolved. 2, u, r , are all common spellings online. Even IRL too! Once or twice I caught my teacher writing something up on the board like this: Who was Timothy Meeker? How is he in any way like u? Just dont use leet!!! TK v3
I may be a moderate noob, and I may be from the UK, but in my other set of forums that I visit people get grilled for incoherency in typing. Okay, 1337-5p33k is cool sometimes, but the use of 'u' for 'you', 'y' for 'why' and 'r' for 'are' drive me insane sometimes. On a third set of forums, it's mainly dutch but people still get on my nerves for misspelling. Typos I can live with - it just shows we're human. But everything else is punishable by death or by Pugler...
