LHammonds
Gmax is a free 3D modeling program based on a stripped-down version of 3ds Max. As of 2005, all support for the product has stopped. You can also download it from TESNexus. Here are some tutorials that anyone new to GMAX should read: None so far...anyone know of any? Here are some game-related tutorials related to modding with this tool (might be separated into their own pinned threads one day): None so far...anyone know of any? Here are some locations to find more tutorials related to this tool: LeJohn TutorialsFreddie's TutorialsGmax Aircraft TutorialThe Stupid Idiot's Guide to Starting with gMaxVolker's Gmax TutorialOregon-Coast.netFSAlpha Design GroupTrainz Railroad Simulator 2004
LHammonds
Feel free to reply here and let us know of any additional tutorials or tutorial sites that are out there in the wild that we do not know about. Also, feel free to post any requests for tutorials. I will try to keep a compiled collection of requests on the 2nd post. Bare in mind that requests are generally for ANYONE to complete...not specific to an individual. List of requested tutorials (number on the end is how many times it has been requested) None yet. ghastley
FWIW, gmax was intended as a redistributable 3D editor that could be wrapped by game supplier as part of their own toolkits. Discreet/AutoDesk made their money from supplying the full 3DS MAX licenses to the game builders, and licensing the "game kit builders", so you'l find gmax under a number of aliases. I used it as SiegeMax for building models for Dungeon Siege, and there were a number of tutorials for that (some by me). 3DSMAX 4.2 was the basis for gmax, and so tutorials for one work with the other (except for any stripped-out features, of course). gmax can save in its own .gmax format, but cannot export to anything else without a plugin or script built specifically for gmax, and I've had no real luck with the .nif one. However, Helborne has managed it, so it's probably just me. Import is a bit more permissive, but gmax will not import a full .max scene, just .3ds objects. Plugins for MAX 4.2 may or may not work with gmax, and that's a really old release, so they're hard to find anyway. If any tutorials depend on plugins, you may not be able to use the same methods. LHammonds
When I tried to find a collection of tutorials, it was extremely difficult. Most links I found for tutorials pointed to dead sites or no longer had their supporting images.
Ghogiel
practically every tool in gmax is in still in max. there are just a whole bunch of features, like the baker, some UV and poly modelling tools, and a load of modifiers that are missing from gmax. most of which are actually useful there are some plugins that work for ithttp://www.turbosquid.com/Forum/Index.cfm/stgAct/PostList/intThreadID/30943
RickyW
Gmax is still in the game. Still working on my Windows 7. It was easy upgrading to 3ds Max because gmax is an older version of 3ds Max. Here is a new site on Gmax tutorials I found recently: http://tutorialboneyard.com/GMAX.aspx For an OBJ exporter: http://tutorialboneyard.com/GmaxExporter.aspx
