Have you ever broke your game and how?

Hi guys, I'm just curious if anyone else here has broke their game or were really close to breaking their game and if you have any tips for others so they can avoid breaking their game by mistake? Allso, if you did break your game and fixed it, what did you had to do?

I'll start. I've almost managed to break my game 3 times. All of the times I didn't make a backup before I installed a mod with many compatibility patches needed for it to work. What happend to me was that I downloaded a mod that needed some patches for it. And when I finished downloading the patches it asked me to overwrite things that other mods changed. And this is the part that broke the game for me I think. You see, I got CTD instantly and I ran loot. I ran TESVEdit and there were no errors in TESVEdit but still I got constant CTD's. I couldn't do anything to fix it without completely re-installing the game.

My tip for everyone: Make a backup every time you download a huge mod or a mod that needs many patches for it. If I only did this it would have saved me a lot of troubles.

I did it the way I'm guessing most people do: I removed mods mid-game. I ended up with all kinds of left over scripts, which eventually led to me being unable to do anything with out a CTD. In this case, I was able to more-or-less save it with the savegame script cleaner, but that particular save was still prone to random crashes.

Same as saurusmaximus, removing mods midgame.

And again, removing scripted mods midgame is a really, really bad idea. I managed to salvage my save with a savegame script cleaner. This was the old fashioned one that involved batch files and no nice gui. Oh boy.

It led to some problems afterwards but in comparison to the trouble I was having before it was heavenly. It even managed to stop the frequent crashes too my game has been mercifully crash free for a long time, I'm much more careful about what I install now and more importantly, uninstall.

Adding mods that seemed fine at first but caused massive problems mid-game is a frequent problem of mine. Removing mods then starting a new game helps out but it is a pain. Also using graphic mods without Enboost, couldn't move an inch without a ctd.

modding skyrim is a big mistake

You're kinda in the wrong site if that's your point of view lol

Anyway, back to the subject. I rarely download big and script heavy mods as for me it just isn't worth it. Too many risks and bugs and incompatibilities which require patches...so on and so forth. I stick to the mods like the populated series which just adds more NPCs to the game.

I've never really broke my game except for when I installed an overhaul I really wanted for a playthrough. I couldn't get it to work right and it was just causing problems so I just uninstalled it and deleted the save game (didn't care for it anyway).

to clean skyrim from mods you must reinstall it and start new game everytime you break your game also the mods that add new armors, spells, npcs, etc, well not be removed 100% from the game no it well leave some garbage (left over scripts) in the game files and in your player inventory new game may fix the inventory but not the game itself that's why i said modding skyrim is a big mistake also it well be annoyning if you are using steam because you well have to download the files again to reinstall skyrim (that's if you did not backup the game before installing mods) also there so many people don't have a fast internet speed the (happy thing that i have the original CD and i don't have to download the game again :D)

i installed mods before and this is what happened : CTD,LAG,Graphics problems and so many other problems

Modding Skyrim is not a mistake. If you want to mod your game then you can do it. There's no mistake at all by doing so...

moddding skyrim is not a big mistake if you are not going to deleted the mods that you have installed
