Rastafariel
Great post gregcoll. I agree. I don't want steam forced down my throat. I favor personal choice...
pob255
Both Gregcoll and Frank Lee have written very solid posts. Outside of Major Urban areas fast internet access can be a major problem, granted coverage is better than it was just 5years ago but it's still far from total. I have a passionate dislike for steam and it becomes a major factor for me when getting games, I really have to want to get a game to make it outweigh my dislike of steam. *IF* steam was just a online registering and updateing client then I wouldn't mind it anywhere near as much as I do, it would still serve it's "anti-piracy" roll nicely.I don't object to MMO logon and update clients, however steam has become bogged down with selling stuff and advertising. When I stop playing FO:NV and finally drag myself to bed, why is the supposed anti-piracy software poping up a window trying to sell me "games I might also like" Also that I can only install the game within the steamapps folder, boarderlands was a much better game for this and that's got a major online component. When you installed it off the disc you could install that where you wanted to, you only needed to register it via steam once done you can happly play single player without ever needing to use steam again, if you want to play online then you had to reconnect to steam. I'd like to also point out that steam does reduce piracy, it doesn't stop all piracy but it does reduce it as you cut out a lot of casual piracy, until someone releases a "pre-cracked easy-one-step install" that is.And actually the biggest way to cut down on piracy is to not allowing people high speed internet, it's high speed broadband that's really encouraged piracy, esp casual piracy, back when speeds where far lower far fewer people where prepaired to leave something downloading for hours or days on end esp as that's with all your bandwidth being used so you couldn't do much else online. And for those who where will to wait then the number of thing they would download per month was also far lower. frank lee
Agreeing largely with what Pob225 wrote and it seems to come down to the fact that the internet has changed the world and high tech games companies are among the people who are failing to adapt. Using it as the brake not the gas pedal. (steam powered! how backward looking does that sound?) I use a lot of 3D animation software and one of my favorites is Antics3D. That's a company that could think forward, they launched their product (basically a movie set) and gave it away. It came with lighting rigs, cameras, some basic characters and props and it was free. It worked surprisingly well for a brand new application but no one minded the bugs (free remember) just reported them and they were fixed in revisions and updates. Once you had got the hang of the app you could either buy the addons, more characters etc or get into modeling and sell your models through Antics sites and forums. Once Antics had built up a rock solid product with about a million built in extras they sold it as a high end professional package for whats called 'pre-viz'. Its used by film makers, forensic analysis an a whole bunch of stuff and is doing rather well in it's (admittedly small) niche market. The software wasn't that revolutionary, it just brought a bunch of thing together. What was impressive was how they developed it, I developed it, me and a couple of thousand other enthusiasts. And now people like Ridley Scott use it . . Now compare that to Bethsofts approach they are still trying to sell the game like its Kerplunk or Hungry bleeding Hippos despite the fact that obviously doesn't work. The time has come to think outside the box (forgive the pun) These big software companies remind me of a man with a fist full of sand, He sees some sand leaking between his fingers so squeezes harder. . . . Ez0n3
I have Steam set to off-line mode and to not sync with the cloud. Last night, from a hotel room, I tried to play without hooking up to the hotel's wireless and it sat at an "Updating Steam ..." window for about 10-15 minutes until I gave up and linked to the wireless and it took off right away. Not the behavior I'd hoped for.Same problem here. I keep hearing "use offline mode then", but it doesn't work. It endlessly tries to update. It knows I have internet and am choosing to not let Steam use it - and it's making it mad. :ninja:
