Malchik
Not sure if this is the right place to start a thread on this. I've raised the issue in a couple of replies but perhaps its worth giving it a topic of its own. There are lots of references to 'cheating' in the posts but what exactly constitutes cheating? I completed Morrowind and Tribunal the first time before I had access to the internet and without help from others. I could not resort to hints and spoilers, on-line maps and the like. Also I did not use the console to change level or alter stats or give myself more money. So I can say I played it straight. There were things I missed. Who is going to get Eltonbrand without a hint? But I enjoyed the experience. As I've done it once, surely a little boost to money at the beginning of the game to save camping out by the Creeper/Mubcrab isn't cheating? Pleads deperately for support. Grovel. Grovel. Or must I crawl away in shame and hang my head? (A damned sight harder to do than hanging all of me.) And if a little boost is aok, what about a medium sized boost, or even a great big boost? I suppose it all comes down to that fine line. Could somebody let me know who drew it? Cheers
Switch
Lol well personally I don't believe in using the console for anything but fixing bugs (like when your character gets stuck or stuff falls through the floor). Using the console for money, leveling, etc, is cheating IMHO. Also using any mod that inserts unbalancing items/features is also cheating. It doesn't really matter if you cheat or not, it IS just a game after all, but cheating can ruin your fun. Just cheat as much as you like, so long as it doesn't ruin things for you. loveme4whoiam
I think that defining cheating comnes down to the individual player. Speaking for myself, i consider any use of the console to remove/skip quests/get items/add gold... blah blah blah... cheating. Get my drift? Then again, i have a wide variety of mods, none which stupidly overbalance the game, but ones that give you really good (daedric diakatana) weapons really early on in the game, which you could either sell or use to pulverise enemies who cannot stand up to you. I can that cheating, but i still use it <_< I also consider "power playing" cheating *prepares to become bombarded by people wanting to kick my ass* :( That is, making cheap training spells that use no magicka and level up really quickly. But i do that as well. Like i said, its all down to what the player thinks is cheating. But no using the console. Never.
Pob
Personally I define cheating (in this instance) as using the console to do anything other than move out of rocks etc and use of unbalanced items. The quick levelling tips (1pt spells) are sort of cheating. To be honest there is no need to cheat the game is graded enough as it is, you just have to be circumspect about what you do in the early levels
Baphomet
For me it's just like resolving any question of right or wrong in my own mind... if you have to ask yourself, "Is this cheating?" it is. For you. Where you yourself draw the line is entirely up to you. It's YOUR game to enjoy, and you have to answer to no one but yourself. I will tell you though that most people, myself included, will say that playing the game as it was intended to be played will, in the long run, give you the most satisfaction. Switch
(( thinking i should run for office... )) I think you should too. If Arnold Schwartzeneger (sp?) could do it, you can too! :D
Malchik
Before I get shot down in flames. I only use the console command fixme. But I like to try the plug ins and one of them gives you over 1,000,000 septims for the cost of a levitation potion. I wouldn't dream of using it - of course. (Ducks the thunderbolt) Erm - not more than the one time. But it does make me wonder about having a little more money at the start. Is it really so much worse than mixing up 16 billion potions or robbing the Great House vaults in Vivec? Doing either of those is legit and has the same effect. As long as we can square our consciences I suppose.
thanateros
Some of the mods out there add rather unbalanced item to the game, so in general I make my own items that seem to fit my character (usually I 'allow' them to have one personal item that isn't significant but doesn't suck either). Also there are some items in the game that I simply refuse because they are overly powerful in the first place. Point and case, the Amulet of Shadows...way too unbalanced IMO. Some of the rings and amulets you get from the Ash Vampires might fall into that category too, but given you need to be rather skilled to get them in the first place. The amulet of shadows is really easy to get for what you have to do to get it.
Acoran
Personally, I think cheating is bad, becasue it has ruined to many gaes for me...but I still yuse the console...as a time saver. my chars are alomst al ligetly rich...so instead of walking all the way to a stilt strider on my slow comp, i use coc or instead of marking and almsi intervention, buying potions then recalling back i just additem...i consider this cheatign but it rest ok on my consience so i still do it...and if it is something big I'm giving my self I drop gold on the ground or use removeitem equal to that of the value of the potions... But as someone above said...IT is really up to the player...
wesaynothin
Cheating really depends on what mood your in too. Sometimes I'm perfectly happy to grab a siltstrider from Vivec to Ald'Ruhn. Other days, I just srop some gold and 'COC' myself there. I once spent three lockpicks breaking into a ship. Once I was in, there were two guards there! I was so mad, I just set their health to 0. I never though it was cheating, because I was so mad. Its just how you feel.
