Feltmarskal
So i played a little, only completed about 3 quests i think but i'm not really sure to get into the game, it's the first time i ever play a fallout game. I bought it because 2 of my friends recommended it. I would really like would like to know more about this game before COD: Black Ops will be released, so i'm not going to spend all my limited playing time on that game. Tips would be useful or a direction to another topic. Another question. Why can't i enter the adult only-content on http://www.newvegasnexus.com/ Yes, i am logged in. I use Google Chrome, maybe i should delete my cache? Well thanks in advance. ;)
JCHR
Fallout is not meant to be learn to play, just wander around, do wahtever you like to, and see the consequences, you'd probably see hilarious things. oh and about not being able to access adult content: you must disable "block adult content" on your account page. TehRoot
It's basically wether you like a really well done single player, or a primarily multiplayer gaming experience. They are on different sides of the playing spectrum. It really comes down to you individual tastes in gaming.
Feltmarskal
I guess i have to get into the game first and really start exploring. I found out myself how to remove the adult-content censorship. :)
cerebus23
early on stick with the scripted story missions, do not play on hardcore having to eat drink sleep and goto doctors to get limbs healed or carry around a dozen doctors bags will slow you down and ammo has weight to boot. level up some before you go explore and do anything you want cause more than likely you will end up dead the first time you run into a rad scorp or super mutant or deathclaw, do good springs do primm do the prison and follow the story basicaly and just explore the general neighborhood. and do not get too inquisitive too early on. save your armor piercing and hollow point ammos for mobs that really require it, buy ap and hp rounds for guns you are going to use and horde the stuff cause the more you explore and the more you get towards the middle and end of the game you definately need those types of ammos to get the most bang for you buck and keep you alive. but do not waste hp or ap ammo on gekos and powder gangers cause well it is a waste when a standard bullet will do you or a shovel to their face for that matter. this is not a pure fps game, shooting things requires skill checks and weapons have skill requirement to get the most use and most accuracy out of them. tho there is a mod or two that makes the game more pure fps and takes some of the magic bullet out of the game. vats learn to use it when in a pinch, V key take out legs of fast moving mobs, shoot armored targets in the face, etc. and if you take the perk for the strangers they show in vats and can save your arse form time to time when you really need it like the time i shot a deathclaw and did not his 4 friends in the cliffs behind him and miss fortune or whatever her name is showed and killed 3 of them in vats herself. beyond that have fun if that means going at it hardcore and cranking the difficulty up and just scraping by do it if that means dling some god items and toggling god mode have it,
WuphonsReach
The basic newbie suggestions: - There are no bad perks. Some are less useful then others, but better weapons negate a lot of issues. - Keep your SPECIALs at the start all close to 5-6, no lower then 4 and no higher then 7 or 8. - Repair your weapons with found weapons that are similar until you are past the indent. Past the indent, they will do their best damage (at least with your current skill level). Or pay an NPC to repair them for you (which can cost a few thousand caps in some cases). - Repair your armor past the indent. - Buy up every round of armor-penetration (AP) or shotgun slug ammo that you can find when you see it. Especially if it's for a gun that you use regularly or think you'll use down the road. - Learn to play Caravan and rob the NPCs that will play with you blind using it. - Better weapons are those with higher DAM numbers and roughly equivalent DPS. Higher DAM per shot means less gets wasted on the enemy armor (their DT or damage threshold). So a Hunting Shotgun (12ga) is better then the Lever Action Shotgun (20ga), especially if you use 12ga slug ammo against armored foes. - Hardcore mode isn't that difficult, even for a first play through. - Train up all skills to 25 to get past skill checks, then specialize. gsmanners
I think it's probably more important to know what to avoid. Don't waste a lot of points on Barter or any type of weapon you don't plan to use. I would especially avoid Energy weapons early on, and it might be a good idea to avoid melee or unarmed your first time around. Just stick with guns. Having said that, I think having high Lockpick and Repair is more important than Guns skill. Then maybe Science, Medicine, Survival and Sneak. The first time you play, you definitely want to talk to friendly people as much as possible and listen carefully to what they're telling you. Every detail will become important at some point in the game.
WuphonsReach
I dunno, having 50 speech and 50 barter helps in all sorts of situations (lots and lots of barter/speech skill checks in New Vegas). Medicine is the one skill that I've let lag (it's not even to 25) and there's only been 3 skill checks so far where I wish I had trained it up. (I'm almost to 75 speech now along with 75 lockpick and 45 repair at level 21. I need to get Science to 50 soon.)
soot00
Unlike other RPG's where you are taken by the hand and basically force fed specific areas while other zones are locked out, Fallout 3 is a free form game. Do what you want. Wander around and explore ... the story will unfold as you play at your pace

While skills like Speech were pointless to have in Fallout 3, it's much more helpful to have in New Vegas.
