nivea
Oh yes, even hard copies that you would think should have no need for a internet connection or steam.... require Steam. :\ Edited June 8, 2011 by nivea
Darth Dan 12
all legal copies do not require steam...? I saw a nv case on a shelf at my local gamestop... We really can't help you if you're using the pirated version. You might want to look out for the annual Steam summer sale - FNV might be cheaper then. deu58
all legal copies do not require steam...? I saw a nv case on a shelf at my local gamestop... You can buy the FONV dvd from any game store but all it really does is hook you up to steam as already having paid for the game an you still have to download from steam the rest of the game files. There is no other legal choice. Either steam or nothing. When I bought my dvd I was hoping it would give me the choice for off line single player with out steam. Nope. I had to hook up to steam first and if I want to play off line I have to use the steam off line mode.

Mortrix927
all legal copies do not require steam...? I saw a nv case on a shelf at my local gamestop...Yes, and that copy will have a steam client on it. If you rent it, steam will know by the code you put on to activate it that it's a rental, and how long the rental is. That's one of the reasons new games are coming out requiring things like steam (so you can't rent a game, install it, and have a 90% discount forever.) Wouldn't the user still have to wait for steam to down load the main files? On my machine it takes hours for steam to down load games.
Sunnie
if you rented the game and got the DVD from a store or other company via mail, it would just be a matter of patching to the latest version, not the entire install. More than likely, you will have to wait for steam to update itself, and the game itself. So, yes, in that sense, a good portion of your rental time could be taken by updates. Unless, of course, you already have steam.
nivea
QQ, big bad Bethesda making them actually buy a game to be able to get updates. Ironically I think Beth has made people turn to the pirated versions even more now that they force a unwanted program on people, the sheer amount of people being banned for pirated versions seem to have increased. Good job.

Good job. The only thing I do not like about steam is the long download times. It took me 18 hours to download NV. That was with DSL. Now some poor bugger on dial up? And as you seem to point out this new buy on line does not seem to have had any effect on Pirates.
