Malchik
Can somebody please explain SPAM? I know it as unwanted emails that sell stuff or are pornographic or both. It doesn't seem to mean that here. Sorry to be so dim but the internet has been closed to me until very recently. (Troglodyte Neanderthal Luddite). Please explain in words of one syllable. Elaborate, obfusc or abstruse polysyllabic definitions discombobulate me.
Switch
Spam is the following: 1) An unrelated off-topic post in a thread that has nothing to do with it whatsoever. Like "Can I snipe?" or "I like chocolate." In a thread about where to find Caius Cosades. 2) One lined replies to threads/posts like "Yeah" "Ok" "Uh-huh"... unless it's someone replying to someone who just helped them saying "Thanks!". That's ok. 3) One lined threads that have nothing to do with anything. 4) Posting any old rubbish to increase your postcount. Like a thread full of ££HU£)£R@{ER, %£ERRETLT{KE, in a number of replies. 5) Making a thread solely for advertising a site, without giving any sort of explanation as to what it is. 6) Double posting. Posting successively one post after another also. I think that's all of it. Some people have different ideas of spam but that's what I look out for when I go moderating. :P
Malchik
Thanks Switch. I felt like a ****** not knowing. Perhaps you could help with another question. Peregrine (Hail to thee blythe spirit, bird thou never wert and happy birthday for last week) suggested I should get involved in role play. Well, I'm both actor and writer and very used to role play in those contexts and would be happy to do so. Unfortunately I didn't find the sites as easy to understand as I hoped. Can you point me at the simple explanation for duffers. Esp. If I want to introduce my character. Or if I want to start a scenario. Finally, do they have to be MW related or can anything go? I do have a dungeonmaster in the family who has promised to help me out but we don't live close to each other and it will be a while before we get together. If there's a good one to start looking at please let me know.
Switch
What do you mean? What sites? Well anyway, for introducing characters, just state your name, age, appearance, history behind your character etc (follow other people's examples if you're not sure), then post it in the Stinking Barfly Tavern forum. To start a scenario, first make a sign-up thread, explaining the story behind it, what world it's set in etc (from this you can guess that it doesn't have to be Morrowind related) then set down what sort of things you want people to state about the character they want to use. (I'm just getting this from previous examples I've seen on the forum). Sign-up threads typically go in the Wilderness forum. Then give it about a week for people to sign up, then start a separate thread for the actual roleplay. You can take on a DM role if you like, or just make the players think up the story as they go along (though that can get a bit chaotic). As for a good example of one of these RP threads you could try The Search for the Golden Horn (some name like that) it's the longest RP yet, and pretty well done too. It's in the Wilderness forum. ThetaOrionis01
As for SPAM, I would add thread necromancy to Switch's list. If a thread has had no posts for weeks, then please don't revive it just to say 'lol' or 'that's funny' or something in that vein - this is simply post-count boosting SPAM. Reviving a thread because you have relevant new information is a different matter altogether - for instance if you have discovered the solution to a question asked in the thread but never answered, or if you want to post an update about a plugin mentioned in a thread etc. Regarding role play on these forums, there is a lot of information in the pinned threads in the roleplay forums. :)
