The1Doc
sorry for the OT, but we are fan boys for choosing nvida? well thats pretty harsh. i couldnt be bothered checking, but isnt the meaning of "fan boy" someone who loves, pushes, defends something regardless of how good it is? what was ATI have gotten better & closed the gap, while nvidia has had some average cards, it seems that ATI had more bad than good. it all comes down to preference & thats what james prefers. also if CC & Thor were fan boys, they might have said something like "just go nvidia, doesnt matter what" but i dont see that in the replies. to me, nvidia just seems to have an all-round better quality product, but then i must be a fan boy along with all the other nvidia users. i have to say that nvidia's release of drivers has become annoying over the last 6 months or so. it seems that some app download sites like filehippo have been getting whql drivers at a faster rate than nvidia's site hosts. 263.09 is the latest ive seen, while nvidia only has 260.99. Harbringe
As for the DX10 or DX11 part of this.I seem to remember years back that if you had a card that could use say DX5 but not DX6 ,even if you installed DX6 your card would only use the DX5 components in the newest drivers yet your sys info would say you had DX6 installed.I believe that was the whole purpose behind Nvidia's Unified Driver Architecture ,your card will use whatever is appropriate to it ,not what may be listed in your sys info
CommanderCrazy
But, as I said before, I can actually use Dx11 in games. Wow... Dx5...
evildead789
Just to say my comment about this i bought a brand model packard bell recently, i know a lot about pc hardware but frankly i couldn't put it together myself for the price i bought it for. The only things i needed to change was the psu and the videocard The system i bought looked like this i3 530 cpu4 gb dd3 ramgt 320 nvidia So the gt 320 had to go, it ran all games but i wanted some more quality, the quality of the gt 320 is a little bit better than the gt220 .I searched and i searched for a good card and i bought the ati hd 5770. Which runs everything on very high. I costed me 150€. I'm sure you can get it for a 100 pounds. It beats the gts 250 by a mile. I'm not a fan of any brand. I had a lot of nivida cards in the past and some ati cards. But to me all the nvidia cards lately sounds like a lot of crap. They resold their 8800 gtx as the 9800 gtx and then the gts 250. Yes these are actually all the same cards , the only thing that could differ is the memory and that doesn't change the card at all. Then the whole 4 series are a little too loud, too power hungry and too hot. The gtx 460 is a good buy though. The gtx 480 is an abomination. The gtx 580 seems a good card though but comes a little too late . I think that that cayman gpu will beat the crap out of nividia. But no i'm no ati/amd fanboy. Nvidia is overall (in history) the better gpu maker. But @ some times ati kicks their ass. This time is like the same time when nvidia had their geforce 5 fx series. Bad cards and way too loud.Ati had the 9800 pro at that time which was superior in every way. All the 9xxx series card from that time were very good cards .Even the 9200. All the 5xxx geforce series were crappy cards. Looks like also here history repeats itself Don't know about that gtx 580 but if the cayman is superior then nvidia will show up with a 6 series card that will give amd a run for it's money. So if you're buying now i would go ati/amd and wait for nvidia 's revenge :woot:
xJamesG
Right, I REALLY can't strech my budget that much - As much I would like to ... I'm saving up for a Loaded Dervish CUstom Set-up so ... GT 240? 430? MAYBE 450 or 460 if I win the lottery? EDIT :: I've been talking to a mate of mine - He said something about an ATI 5670? Anyone know how good it is?It's in my price range and it seems pretty good ... But it's ATI ... Not that it's a problem, just I would prefer NVIDIA lol Edited November 28, 2010 by xJamesG
Ghogiel
5670 is ok midrange, at 70quid price range there aren't many good choices. It will certainly do the job. And with that particular card, setting can probably be quite high.. for the most part. at any rate i think that might be the better choice at that price range. I think it will just have more shelf life. tbh i would really try for a 5770 which is a good cheap bit of kit. And will run everything on high settings. they run about 100-120 quid http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=701&catid=56&subid=1515&sortby=priceAscYou can get a 460GT for little bit more, but it won't be a 1gb OC one, so be sure to take that into account when looking at benches. I quite recommend that retailer if in the UK.
evildead789
if the hd 5670 is your budget i would go for that one or you choose one from this list. In this article there is a list where you can compare all graphic card to with each other. The oem cards are not in there , but since you're not buying a new pc (oem-cards come with a new pc , i presume you won't get your hands on one). Oem cards for exampl are the gt 320 , gt 330. But for a few dollars more you can have better cards , just check out this article http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/gaming-graphics-radeon-hd-6870-radeon-hd-6850,review-32039.html
evildead789
oh here's another link. you can compare all videocard to each other too, maybe more easily for you than the previous articleI set your gt 220 as standard to compare to any other videocard. You will see as i was noticing in your first post, there's not a lot of difference between the gt220 and the gt 240.There's a big difference between the gt 240 and the GTS 240 however before i forget here's the link http://www.game-debate.com/hardware/index.php?gid=209&graphics=GeForce GT 220 Happy Hunting!
