Help me!

It's a Shakespearean tragedy....my two computers simply cannot find each other. Are they doomed to be forever apart - or can you help me bring them together?

In other words, I'm trying to network my computers so I can grab my stuff from the old computer on to the new one. The two computers are cabled together, each has a network card - but neither of them can't find the other.

As usual, the Windows help file is proving the oxymoronic nature of its name...

I am running Windows 98 - not for much longer - on both computers (yes, I know... it's time to give it to a museum or bury it in an unmarked grave, but tomorrow is payday)

Oh yes, and the kids are asking me every 5 minutes.. "Are you nearly finished? Can we have your computer now?" - which is not helping when the computers are stubbornly refusing to do what I want them to do.

So please, somebody - tell me how I can achieve a happy ending

If it's just files you're talking about, and you have a pretty standard configuration on both machines (both are PCI, non-RAID, master/slave settings aren't screwed), you can simply rip the hard drive out of one computer and cram it into the other, giving you satisfactory results.

If that seems a bit too Vietnam for you, whatever happened to CD-RWs?

ah....the old computer doesn't have a cd rewriter .... and as for swapping over the hdds.....I had considered that until I had a look at them....and gave up the idea.

I think the problem may be that there is no network server for the two machines to connect to - any ideas how I set that up?

Hey Theat heres how to setup up a direct link between 2 computers.

First make sure you have got the corret drivers for your NIC <network card>. Open up the network properties to see which "services" are running. Make sure that you have these installed.

Client for Microsoft Networks

File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks

Internet Protocol TCP/IP

You can do this by clickiong on the install button <for TCP/IP> and with the others there are some options that say something like this "Enable file/printer sharing" with a check box. Next double click on TCP/IP and set up some IPs <internel IPs for the computers>. Although you do not have to do this. It is advised. Choose the "Use the following IP adress"

IP Adress "192.168.0.1"

Subnet mask " 255.255.255.0"

leave the gateway as nothing. Do Exactly the same for the other computer but change the second IP to "192.168.0.2"

Hoped that helped Theta hola back with any questions

Regards

Helll's right, I've had that exact problem with LAN games before. If you don't set the IP manually, the computer has no way of finding the other. I've done it before with (I think) 1.0.0.x with x a different number for each computer.

And if that doesn't work (and maybe even if it does, depending on your network speed/quantity of files), moving the drive itself always works. Its pretty simple, you just set the old one to slave, connect it to the cable with the new one, then copy all your files with windows.

Yea I should of mention the gist of the IPs aye.

Well you all no you have an IP for the net so you can recieve information. There is a certain allocated number scheme for deciding what IPs you can or can't have <also relates to country etc> Anyway... this set of numbers is GENERALLY reserved for networks

192.168.***.***

Where the *** are the numbers you can have.

I have a small network at home <6 computers. 1 dedicated firewall (Smoothwall) 1 nix box with Fileserver, cache, mail (POP3), ftp and game server and 4 user pcs (3 with nix and 1 with 98)> and I have set the INTERNEAL network up with corresponding numbers

4 User PCs = 192.168.0.4 {} 192.168.0.5 {} 192.168.0.6 {} 192.168.0.7

1 Firewall <with 3 nics> = IP from ISP <I ain't giving you that B) > 192.168.0.1 {} 192.168.0.2

1 "All in one" Server: 192.168.0.3

Hopefully that gives a better idea. All the 192.168.***.*** are used in my INTERNAL network as they will never need to DIRECTLY connect to the internet <thats what the dedicated firewall is for>.

Does that make anymore sense?

Yep, and if you do connect up your old drive to your new machine, once you've copied the files, you can boost your hard drive space by keeping the old one in there as well, though, in case you're not aware, some programs do require some space left free on your 'C' drive (the primary hard drive).

Thank you for your help :)

The IP was the main problem - I had selected 'obtain IP automatically'....as instructed in either the manual or the help file.....yes well. <_<

I found someone on IRC who talked me through this, and also told me such basics as logging in with the computer name....yes well, that's the kind of obvious thing I tend not to notice... Of course, the windows help file didn't mention any of this....has anyone ever actually found anything useful in Windows Help (other than vital information on how to save a file, of course)?

However, even when the two computers were finally introduced to each other, one of them proved to be somewhat shy....

Just for once, I figured out what the problem was myself, and as soon as I'd disabled the firewall the transfer went ahead.

A happy ending
