ThetaOrionis01
Well, I'm getting XP - hopefully either tomorrow or at the weekend....I already had to take out one RAM module because 98 was going crazy....wouldn't even let me install my internet connection because apparently I didn't have enough memory.... <_< But at least I've got my files now, and the kids have taken possession of the other computer.... :D
HeLLL
XP is a brezze to install. It is really simple <for once>. Click on "Setup home network" and follow on screen prompt and in no time !POW! network installed and configured. Hey hey. I rememebr when I was young.........I used to be on my dads 486 ALL the time. It really used to bug him him cause I would ask my mum, she would say yes and then dad tried to kick me off. "But MUM said Im aloud to." In the end Dad gave me the 486 and got a Pentium 100  Kids you got to love them B)

Switch
Nah, XP works fine... well, XP Professional does. I've heard before though that XP Home isn't too great. Glad you managed to get that fixed Theta! :P
Shakkara
Yay!!! Networking using 98 is a biatch anyway. Somedays it will work and some days it will not < fully serious here. transfer files 10 minutes agao and then the network crpas itself  :( > I haven't had a single network problem with Win98 for 3 years, but I have the same problem you discribe (sudden disappearance of everything in the network locations) when I had winXP installed... Windows XP: THE HORROR! Anyway, within 2 weeks I was back to the glory that is win98SE.

ThetaOrionis01
Well, what a fun few days this has been <_< Got XP after work yesterday, put in the memory module, put the xp disk in, it did some of the setup and then it told me it couldn't detect any hard disks.... My first thought was 'uh-oh....I've fried the hard disks with static when putting the memory module back in'.... Booted into 98, and the hard disks were still there and functioning, so ran the xp install again...same thing... So I was like 'WTF??????? Too much choice for you???? I have TWO hard disks and you can't even find ONE?????'. Found a competent person in IRC who suggested that I might have to load raid drivers for XP to be able to recognize the HDDs....ie press F6 during setup. Tried that - didn't work....until I noticed this little button on my sexy new keyboard which said 'F-Lock' on it..... So eventually I got an option to install manufacturer support, and even had the cd ready...when setup asked me for a floppy disk...huh? I have a cd!!!! What do I do now??? Many minutes and IRC cries for help later I thought of trying to make a boot disk...and noticed a little file on the cd called 'readme'....and there, at the very bottom, it told how to make a bootdisk.... So FINALLY, around midnight, I got XP installed. Tried to install my internet connection, and the installer couldn't find the cable modem....Eh???It worked fine a couple of hours ago....what it is with all these installers? Bypassed the installer and used add hardware instead... Got online, and promptly picked up mslaugh.exe worm <_< Installed the Norton Firewall, which came free with the motherboard....and it promptly blocked everyone from contacting me on msn, and didn't let me go online. That was after configuring it to enable msn and internet explorer....I hate Norton! Enabled the XP firewall instead, and uninstalled Norton (i'm looking forward to a little regedit to get rid of it for good  ). Installed anti-virus to get rid of the worm ...and it promptly found a few more.... Tried to update the virus scan this morning, and got error messages...well, what was I expecting? Got in touch with tech support who told me about registry editing to get rid of a previous install and uninstall of the virus scan.... Even zipgenius sulked and had to be uninstalled and reinstalled So....all I have left to do now is install my programs...... And I thought this was going to be easy  But I have gained some valuable insights: -memory modules have sharp edges, and bleeding on your motherboard is to be avoided - Read me files are there for a purpose - Avoid Norton at all costs - or it will tell you to wrap up warm and not to talk to strangers.
Switch
ROFL!! And you survived that?? My god. Well personally I use Norton all the time and it works fine for me, but that is the 2003 version (and had some somewhat-more-competent-than-me friends install it for me :P). Tell me, is it XP Home you're using? I've heard a few times that that's an OS to avoid...
Marxist ßastard
And to think, all those problems couldn've been avoided by a solid SP2 of Windows 2000...
