What if the Courier Could Talk?

Okay, what I'm about to talk about is crazy. So, if you don't want to waste your time listening to another man's insanity, then you might want to go find another forum to reply to. Just saying.

In every single Fallout game ever released, the player character is a silent protagonist. Why can't the character talk after a dialogue option for a conversation with an NPC is selected? Well, it's all part of the player's imagination I guess; but what if someone were to voice the Courier? Now, there's an issue with that since the voice would have to relate to the following: gender and age. You have two genders to choose for your character. Therefore, a talking voice would have to be either male or female. You also choose to play either a young or elderly character. I think the voice would have to reflect on that. However, if a speech voice were to be given to the character, the grunting and screaming from when the character gets shot, stabbed, bone broken, or killed would have to match with that voice. How to do all of this, I don't know; but I do know that every dialogue section for the game would have to be edited in the GECK, which would be a lot of work. I think it would be even more work for the voice actors honestly.

Like I said, this is a crazy idea; and I doubt that anyone would have the patience for something like this. If anyone were to do the same for Fallout 3, great; but with different player-character voice actors on that one because the player character in that game is not the same one from Fallout: New Vegas. The dialogues for the DLCs would be nice as well; but, again, this is a lot of work.

I am always looking for opinions based on ideas like these. Feel free to speak your peace.

Personally, I always wanted my Courier to have self side banter while exploring like a Borderlands Vault Hunter. And not just "Headshot" or "I've Got Balls of Steel," but like... you'll walk into a cave and randomly your courier will go, "Right, very creepy," while exploring. But, all that stuff would need to be scripted... so... (sigh) likely not to happen.

I don't think you read my entire thread. I was not talking about all other dialogues, just the ones where the player character is talking to an NPC. All other experiences can stay silent for all I care. I was not referring to caves or combat taunts.

There's not just the age and gender. Different mental attributes and karma should be significant too, and personality. When I think of this I remember games such as Neverwinter Nights, where you got to choose the voice of your character from a list, and even in that game the voices were there only for battlecries and such. It didn't cover dialogue either.

Also, your character would be silent again when speaking to NPCs from mods.

Bottom line, I don't think it would be an insane amount of work, just that there are too many things to consider, too many inconveniences for it to be worthwhile.

If I were to make something like this, I think I would try to simplify things by picking only two voice actors (one male and one female) and editing the audio samples myself. I would first decide a bunch of stereotypes that would work as presets that the player can choose from, then I would ask the VAs to provide me with an audio sample per preset per dialogue option. So if there are 3 presets, they have to give me 3 audio samples per dialogue option. Then I would edit the audio samples to create, for example, 3 different voice pitches per preset (low, normal and high). So, the player would have 3 presets to choose from, and for every preset there would be 3 available voice pitches. That's 9 different voices to choose from per gender. However, even with that many options you could still fail to find one that suits your character.

Your Courier HAS a voice, you can talk to NPC's all the time.

It's your voice, you don't actually hear it in game, as that would be too immersion breaking (especially if you play as the opposite gender) but when you take damage, your character definitely makes noise. XD

It is a crazy idea, especially for a roleplaying game. It just doesn't work for this genre. As claustromaniac pointed out, it's not just age and gender; lots of 20yo men talk differently, for instance. And roleplaying games are about creating your character and using your imagination, having the PC speak would would break that.

It's like every thread I write in every forum I go to about anything is received negatively. I refuse to accept that everyone disagrees with my ideas. As the old saying goes, "When there's one, there's always the other." Fine, you don't have to agree with my idea, but I posted it anyway. The voice does not make a character, but the character's choices are what do the trick. For example, Commander Shepard from Mass Effect is not a "defined" character, just like the Courier and the Wanderer are not defined characters, yet one of the three has a voice that does not break away from the player's imagination. At least give it a try, and then prove to me that I'm wrong.

I should have known better when you said that we were free to speak our piece. Why don't you try and argue instead of getting pissy about it?

It's funny that you mention Commander Shepard, because he's a perfect example of what I am saying. He is very much a defined character. In fact, that is one of the reasons, along with the poor RPG elements, that actual roleplaying is so difficult in Mass Effect. Roleplaying works best when you're free to use your imagination to create your character. Having a voiced protagonist gets in the way of that.

And I never said that what you're suggesting is a bad idea for everyone. I wouldn't want it, for the reason stated. You asked for my opinion and I offered it. My opinion shouldn't matter in whether someone makes something or not.

You know what? You're right. An opinion is an opinion. Besides, an idea like this would require experimentation for starters, because what idea I offered is more like "easier said than done". I see that now. Secondly, if you feel as if it stands in the way of how you want to envision your character in the game, that's your perspective. I may be giving everyone the position to speak freely, but that does not mean that I won't defend my ideas.

What about everyone else? Care to say a word?

If you don't want to meet a negative reception, being on the defensive won't help. Just take it easy, this is not a matter of life or death. You're in a forum, posting some ideas. If you don't want to keep getting frustrated over it, you have to learn to deal with the fact that not everyone will agree with you, and if you can't deal with that consider not exposing yourself to that possibility at all. I mean, is it worth it?

I don't want to sound condescending or anything, it's just a piece of advice. Taking it or leaving it is entirely up to you.
