Broken Steel won't Start

I have no idea about using geck I'm not a mod author nor know how, And the mods I want to keep mostly are - EssentialFollowers+Caravans.esp and a mod that allows you alt tab without crashing, I dont remember its name ... But it wont be showing in the esp list , and no I didn't find which mod is stopping bs from naturaly starting . but did find that using no mods, would allow it to start, ..

I'm trying to find out why it wont with any mods, when a lot of others have no issue getting it started with mods active ><

That's how everyone starts out when playing a modable game for the first time. Then, like you, their unique selection of mods causes the game to not work, and they realize that playing this game requires a lot more knowledge than other games. Bethesda did not make it easy for us to mod their games.

First is dealing with the load order, which requires learning how to use a mod manager. FOMM and Wrye BASH are the only real choices, since they are designed specifically for this game. NMM is too generic and misses things required for the game (like archive invalidation).

Then there is mod cleaning and creating a merged patch, which requires FO3Edit. You should clean all of the vanilla DLC ESMs as well as most mods. It is also essential for identifying conflicts between mods.

Then there is the GECK, when you want to start tweaking things in other mods or create your own.

So, it's up to you. You can only get so far with modding the game if you don't want to learn anything about it. Maybe (if you don't add any more mods), Broken Steel not starting will be your only major problem and you can fix it with a console command. I don't know what else that one mod I looked at (the house theme mod) will break, unless you are using Unofficial Patch. In that case it will break the fixes to the script that handles you rescuing captives from Super Mutants and Raiders.

And don't forget to not use autosaves or quicksaves. I did nothing but full saves until I installed the mod CASM.

EDIT: BTW I think it's ironically humerous that you managed to break something with only 10 mods added, and still can't figure it out. Imagine how we all feel when someone posts a mod list of 100 mods (totally different from the mod list other post) and wants to know why the game broke.

I tried fomm and I didnt liike like it , and only so few I've seen only use wyre bash and doesn't sound like something I'd like to try and wrap my head around..

I never auto save hate em, I never quick save , always full manual save..

I'm not a geek to use geck or ck of any kind in the present or future , so glad my little issue gives you some joy...

And game isnt broke per say, just something needs a kick to let BS get past and start ...

So Im not near the end yet to try that console command out...\

So thanks for your postings anyway

You should not fear the geck. It is an incredibly versatile tool. It is easier than sorting load order in my humble opinion :geek: ... to do some simple modification in general.

When need be fix your own game ... it is like being able to just put caulk on it so as to last for this short term facade. Always approach the modding for self game , and published mod ... as separate. But often need the self to figure out the published.

Firsrt and foremost ... make it work for YOU !

But there are things to do to make sure it will be better for publish.

Just that that , need not always be a consideration.

Well if the bs still wont start using console command and will try different time to use in case I use at the wrong moment, I'm going to uninstall fo3 , I'm getting a little bored with it , even when I used mods...

so thanks for you time and posts 😉 👍🏻 🙃

The usual cause of Broken Steel not starting is that you are using a mod that in some way changes the player character.

The fix for this is to use Custom Race Endings Broken Steel Override (CREBSO) https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/6240

It only needs to be active just before the ending and until Broken Steel starts. Once Broken Steel has started, it can be removed from the load order.

5 years later, and this post saved me from starting a new game or going through 300+ mods to see who the culprit was. thank you thank you thank you!

Though that link is broken by a hidden extra %C2%A0 at the end.  It should be https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/6240 like the link text says.

(Glitch from the forum overhaul last year?)
