  1. 1. How much time did it took you to finish the main quest the FIRST time through? (from prison cell to defeat of Mehrunes D.)

My first character is at 153 hours.

Jesus! What do you do? I played through all the guilds and the main quest in somewhere between 30 and 40 and then got bored and abandoned the game. What did you find to occupy 6 full days of play?

I dont know how he did it, but I have an idea how you could reach that.

1. Disable fast travel.

2. Play at highest Difficulty

3. Dont cheat at all.

4. Exploration (this includes dungeons, ayleid ruins, etc)

5. Side quests

6. Listen to dialogues.

8. Factions

8. Stop to admire the beauty of Cyrodiil.

Pack that 8 pack and you've got for a very long time.

Well over 100 hours, and I still never finished the MQ.

I did a lot of exploring smaller dungeons, and a lot of just admiring the beauty of cyrodiil. I liked to just climb to the top of a mountain and watch the sunrise.

I did almost all the side quests, rarely, if ever used fast travel, talked to people, made friends. I went hunting in the wilderness, i rode about on a horse a lot of time,

I cleared about 15 oblivion gates, and became hed of fighter's/thieves guilds. The fact I played alternately with 2 different character helped to stretch it out for me too.

Also, many mods extended Oblivion's lifespan.

I don't play Oblivion much anymore, though I will probably go back and restart sometime in the future.

Cassie-the-Assassin is the first character I decided to push through the entire Main Quest. Well over a hundred hours, by my estimate. I cannot use the Savegame references because I carried the sequence over from a previous character (current savegame notes 222 hours played through).

It took four months (131 days, to be exact) before Cassie showed up in Kvatch. I wanted her to initiate the Main Quest in the role of the Listener of the Black Hand— which she did.

Having Cassie circle 'round on night patrol in Cheydinhal kind of racked in the hours, I imagine.

The single vote you see for "5-10 hours" on the MQ is mine. When I first started playing Oblivion, I turned the difficulty down to the lowest setting and I blasted through as much content as I could... to see what the game was all about. I ripped through the main quest in a few hours and afterwards, I started checking out other stuff.

Boy, was I stupid. Fortunately, I saved my character ("Raven") at the sewers exit during the beginning tutorial. I recently started playing her all over again from scratch.

Here's what I've learned:

(1) Don't do the MQ right away.

(2) Go make some money in the Arena instead.

(3) Then do other stuff.

(4) Don't rush your levels by selecting most-used skills as primary ones (custom class).

(5) Level gradually and in a controlled manner. Build up your skills and attributes intelligently.

(6) Return to the MQ when you get to level 20 or higher. The scaled-up rewards (and battles) are a LOT better then.

Played in this way, Oblivion can become an entirely different experience, or so I'm discovering (painfuilly). My main character has been totally rebuilt and she's becoming incredibly powerful in the process... it's just taking a VERY long time. I now have complete control over when and how she levels up and I deliberately hold off on leveling, until her most-used skills get to decently high levels.

Because of this strategy, at level 10 she's easily as dangerous as she previously was at level 18 or so. "Raven" is becoming a high-speed killing machine, with a ton of health and magicka. :D

It's just so sloooooow this way... LOL. Then again, I'm discovering tons and tons of content that I didn't even know existed before. Next on my "to do list" is to relieve Umbra of her uber sword and other goodies. The previous incarnation of "Raven" had a lot of trouble with Umbra, but I think this revamped build will own that damned wood elf, once and for all. 8)

My rule of thumb is to hit Kvatch no earlier than Level 17. That's when the Sigil Stones from Oblivion Gates start showing up at their highest (Transcendant) grade.

Transcendant Sigil Stones impart enchantments that greatly exceed even those imparted by Grand-level Soul Gems.

Some side quests I hold off on until my character exceeds Level 25 or thereabouts, since certain reward items are leveled accordingly and I desire the highest grade available to the item. This does not include Daedric Shrine quests however— a young character can bide their time and gauge their progress by attempting all available Daedric quests before running through any independent quests. Keep what you want, save one of the discards for Martin's benefit, and sell off the rest for gold.
