I'm a downloader and fan of your mods and although I'm not a TES modder, I do agree with everything you said and feel sorry for you. It's one thing to be grateful that there are talented modders in a community giving away their leisure time and sanity to make our games better for free, but it is another thing for a loud few to feel entitled to 100% free high-quality content. Us downloaders can be unappreciative and entitled asshats and if a modder comes in for endorsements, kudos, popularity, money and/or some other form of compensation, the downloading community can take a greater toll on said modder's self-esteem.

I know this will sound unpopular to downloaders, but I think modders should take at least one long break from modding and the modding community to take care of themselves. And if you want to take your mods down: it will hurt me as a downloader who has endorsed every mod he used/uses in his game, but if it means a healthier FavoredSouls who may or may not one day come back to the modding community refreshed and not burnt out, then I won't complain.

Of course at this point, I'm betting FavoredSouls is finally ignoring this thread and especially its segment of flame-baiters and genuine flamers. Good for him/her. Edited by mindumindumindu

A lot of people seem to want to tell other people the reasons why they should mod and what the wrong reasons are. It must be nice to know everything.

"One of the most extraordinary quest and adventure mod series migrated to ModDb... "

I have to ask, what is the mod your were referring too? I would love to check it out...and I will make sure to thank the author because you are absolutely right; mod authors do deserve our thanks and respect for their work.

@Dark0ne - I think that at the end of the day, paid modding isn't necessarily off the table entirely.

But its gonna need some proper work.

To such ends, your views, and the views of those invested in the future of modding. Rather than just in the future of monetizing more content. Are very much worth keeping in mind.

Even when such things were originally written with the idea that Steam Workshop would remain the primary route.

Also, at the end of the day, I can't see how Bethesda is saying that locking it to one platform was never their intention.

You can't even RUN Skyrim without Steam. They've been locked in pretty hard for a long long time.

Its hard to say you're in favor of an independant system when your main title is locked down.

I am sort of a lurker and come back to Skyrim once in awhile to see the fantastic mods being brewed.

This has always been the way of a modding community for me going back over a decade.

The base game is sort of like this blank slate.

Then the modders come along and paint it beautifully, the longer the community thrives and simmers the more rich the mod experience becomes.

I to have no problem donating, but forced payment will bury a community like this under hatred and legal mumbo jumbo and it will be smothered out over time. You'd have to realize that by it being free it inspires legions of new modders, that would mostly be taken away, because they couldn't afford the "buy in" to be inspired.

"hypothetical migration of the mods to a payment system"

Um... it did actually happen, even if it was only a test run.

Some people do actually find modding fun. I'm just saying that, cuz I do. I'm probably no where near as skilled as that long list of people in the other post, but I try and I have great deal of commitments in my life... house, partner, business etc...

This is my hobby. One day I may very well get good enough to make something worthwhile releasing but not if everything becomes highly exclusive.

i dont know why you feel sorry for bethesta, they release a game that need it a lot of bug fixing and the mod community fix a lot of things, we can see the unoffical patches series, many of us have the illusion we would see a lot DLC's and didnt happen.

and why people love a lot this franchise is because of the mod community.

This game reminds me of NWN (Neverwinter Nights) which have a much more powerfull SDK than anything bethesta release, There were thounsands of servers with entire worlds created with that SDK and even today there are many servers still working.

For company releasing a SDK is not about "we are so nice lets give the players a SDK to create stuff" is more a marketing strategy to stay present in peoples mind.

Its been 4 years since skyrim was realeased and the game is still alive thanks to the mod community not because bethesta keep developing it.

So what they say about mods with more quality and quantity is a complete lie, they want to make money from a game they are no longer developing.

We cant be naive, if they really wanted to support the mod community they wouldnt only give 25% to mod creators.

Not mentioning the problem with people stealing other mods resources or mods to sell them.

didnt chesko have a problem with one of the mods he try to sell because it use the work of other guy?

Mod community is power by the work of a lot of people, a lot of mods wont work without SKSE, TES5, FNIS.

Are they really going to let other people start makign money with their work?

I dont think so. and if they really do well come on thats stupid really.

Anyway no idea if anyone will read this but i dont think this will be the end of it.

They saw the reaction and back off now i wonder what will they create to get the money they want from mods, they already got some modders i wonder how many more will follow that path.
