Question about donations: How much is a "fair" amount?

Yea, donating via paypal was horrible.

Some night last week I decided to donate to the ten mod authors whose mods have given me the most enjoyment. The first three donations went out without much trouble, but afterwards whenever I tried to send a donation, paypal gave me a "your session has expired, please type in this captcha" message. Up to 20 times in a row. Add to that the terrible internet of the place I was at that time, and it took me about two hours to finalize the last donation.

I wasn't aware of that "fee" PayPal charges. I mean, I know they need to make money themselves but it almost feels as bad as the "fees" both Valve and Bethesda were taking out of paid mods. If I donate I want the whole thing going to the mod author and not like half of it. I'll keep this fee thing in mind though on my next donation, thanks.

Yeah, there is a fee, but it's not so bas as Valve system was. And if you think how many users mods have, then even smaller donations sum up quite nicely. 0.66 from one dollar is better than 0,25 what Valve/Bethesda offered ;)

three donations, total: $4,50. After PayPal takes its share and after conversion that's 3,06€ for me.

There is no fair amount imo. For PayPal reasons, donating 50 cents is pointless. Rather "save up" and donate $5 dollars to an author you really like.

It is no way of getting rich at any rate. It is a big thank you and appreciated as such, no matter the amount really.

Yes I do have a suggestion. Bethesda and Valve did have a decent idea with respect to holding on to the money until the amount is large enough that a transaction would make sense. But I don't think Nexus wants to become the middle man.

That would actually be ideal, but yeah, Dark0ne explicitly said he didn't want to do that.

Another option would be to have the Nexus support Patreon by promoting links on the author page just like donations.

It sets up recurring donations which some might not like, but you can give trivial amounts and Patreon will pay the author in bulk each month, thereby circumventing the problem.

So you could either do the normal Paypal thing and give someone $5 here and there whenever you want.

Or you could use Patreon and have it automatically deduct that $5 each month and divide it among five different authors. All without having to handle it yourself.

Well that sucks, I did not know about the paypal fees and just got done donating $1 to 10 mod authors, now I feel quite bad. Hopefully a better donation system is

implemented soon or at least an additional notice about paypal fees when your donating.

FYI PayPal's flat fee varies by country. Eg my flat fee is ¥40 to receive. Their currency conversion rates also take a percent too. With those considerations in mind about $3US per mod will ensure the mod author gets at least half of that.
